Last updated July 2005Name: Bert Kurth, Faculty Present Occupation: Retired, do volunteer work at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha.Past Occupation: First position after college was as a coach and teacher at Colwell, IA where I met my future wife Louise. Then Clermont Consolidated School where I was the Principal/Coach/Shop and History teacher. I taught at Clermont for one year before I was drafted in October of 1942. My discharge was November 25, 1945. I decided to go to school in Iowa City and obtain a Masters Degree in Physical Education. A person I met while in Iowa City, was Charles Jackson, Superintendent at Early, Iowa. Early was starting high school football after the war and Mr. Jackson hired me to be the Football Coach. I taught and coached in Early for 13 years till 1959 when I moved to Omaha where I was Intermural Director at Omaha University . Education/Awards: Bachelors Degree at Chadron College, Chadron, NE. Masters degree at Iowa University. My first year in Early, I was nominated for the "Coach of the Year" award in Iowa. The coach in Atlantic, Iowa had also started football in that community that same year and his team had an undefeated season, as well. Since Atlantic was a much larger community than Early, he won the award. I was so proud of the Early team and was delighted to just be nominated. Besides, my greatest reward that year, had been when my team called me "Coach." Family: I married Louise on August 5, 1941. We had three children Jean, Daniel and Kym. Jason, my only grandchild, finished college at my alma mater, Iowa University. Hobbies: While I no longer curl, I spent many quality hours with family and friends, curling. Joining the Curling club gave my family the opportunity to travel out of town to weekend Invitational Bonspiels. The family all took to the game, bitten by the Curling Bug. Dann was an excellent player and the proudest trophy I have, is the first place we won, playing on the same team. I also helped the Senior National Bonspiel get off the ground. We spent many of our summer vacations camping through Colorado, Yellow Stone Park, Canada and several other locations Comments: I celebrated my 90th Birthday February 18, 2005. I miss Louise and Dann in the deepest possible way. With Kym and Jean's continuous care, Jason close by, and my wonderful caring friends, feel I am still living a full life. Last updated July 2004Name: Jon Winge Thank you for the information and the invitation to participate in this event. Forty-two years have gone by, but not without many thoughts and questions about "whatever happened." I invested about thirty-six years in sales and marketing since leaving your area. Our life and travels took us from Mn. to Va., on to Il. and then a few years in ND before coming back to Mn. We have three children, Michael, a dentist in Long Praire, Sarah, a non-practicing attorney, and Ann is a newspaper promotion and ad person. They are all married and have a total of seven children with another due in September. I retired almost six years ago, at the end of 1998. We travel as often as we can with our 5th-wheel trailer. To date we have been in 46 states and 7 provinces of Canada. We were in Early on March 6 of this year, on our way to a family thing in Arkansas. Not many people around, it was a Saturaday, but we took a good look at the school, the house where we lived, and a quiet tour of main street. We are leaving this Friday for a trip to the North Shore and other points in Northern Minnesota. I trust you will have a great time at your reunion. Please extend our greetings to all. Regards, Jon & Mary Winge |
