| It was not over three years before a wood frame schoolhouse was erected. It was a two-room wood building known as Delaware Central School. This building was replaced with a two-story brick building in 1913 (no photo). That brick building was condemned in 1920. A nice home was then constructed southwest of Nemaha on the Albert Hatch farm using those bricks. That house still stands but has been re-sided covering up the bricks. |
![]() In 1923 a new brick building known as the Delaware Township Consolidated School was erected. It had four levels (counting the sub-level furnace room) with a gymnasium. |
![]() This building had one addition added on the east side in the mid-1950's. The addition consisted of a stage opening to the gym, a music room, kindergarten, first and second grade rooms and two restrooms. |
![]() Early, Iowa and Nemaha, Iowa schools consolidated in 1958 with elementary students still attending the Nemaha school until 1989 when the school joined with Schaller later to become known as Schaller-Crestland. |
![]() The last Nemaha School building was torn down in November 1990. |
![]() The old Nemaha school bus barn still stands and is now privately owned. Note how the modern buses were no longer able to fit inside the building. |
![]() The people of Nemaha decided to beautify the corner lot by building a shelterhouse and Memorial Tree Arboretum on the former school grounds. |
|
They held fundraisers and with volunteer help were able to erect the building with the majority of work being completed in one snowy weekend in April 1997. |
![]() The original Delaware Township Consolidated School sign was partially preserved during demolition and has been restored and placed near the highway in front of the school grounds with an engraved picture of the school below. |
![]() The former Nemaha school ball park is still in use by Little League and has been remodeled and maintained as an attractive ball park. |
