January 15, 2012 Bulletin:

Dear Nemaha UMC congregation,
Thank you so very much for supporting the Network for Environment & Economic Development of Burma through your donations (a note: this was a church donation and Individual donations)  I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them for 6 months and I fully support their mission and believe they are doing great wok to try and address the numerous problems faced in their homeland.
Just today, I came across a visual in the Heifer Magazine, which indicates that Burma is nearly first in line to suffer from the vulnerabilities of agricultural productivity loss. So I think that now, more than ever, organizations like NEED, will be crucial in helping the future generations of farmers and environmentalists learn how to navigate these challenges and build the skills needed to organize their communities
so that they can actively defend their access to food.  I know I can speak for NEED when I say it is very moving to receive support from an agricultural community halfway around the world, despite differences in culture and religion.  And from me personally, it means a lot to have my home town support something I was/am a part of!  So, thanks again, United Methodist Church of Nemaha!                They mentioned that they are working on building a small nursery for fruit trees at the farm/training center----so I believe that is what your funds will also be used for.

Greetings and thanks from Colorado, Jessica Mason

………and while we’re on the subject of missions…….

During the Advent Bible Study, the subject of missions and the possibility of the Nemaha and Varina Churches getting involved in a specific work-related mission was discussed and heartily encouraged.  The Red Bird Mission (Kentucky) and The Rose Bud (South Dakota) were both mentioned.  Following more discussion, it was decided, that perhaps the closer of those two or even a local mission might be the way to start.

ROSE BUD--- The following three statements have been taken from the Tree of Life website. Visit their website http://www.treeofliferelief.org/ if you would like more information on this organization.

We are a “Volunteers In Mission” Destination

Each year over 1,000 volunteers from across the United States come to meet and serve the Lakota and Dakota people, bringing assistance to the poorest group of people in the nation.

The work of our Ministry includes: Work Projects: repairing homes and community buildings with special projects such as playgrounds, Economic Development, Food Distribution, Clothing Distribution, Meal Site.

For volunteers, we present cultural events that are presented by the Native Americans who live on the Reservations we serve. Subjects discussed include Sioux history, culture, poverty, health issues, social issues, Lakota/Dakota games, dancing, and regalia, among others.

We encourage you to think and pray about this mission and ask yourself if this is something you would be interested in participating in----we would need a “full crew” to make it feasible for us.  If you would be interested, please let Rev. Benge know.  If this seems too far away and too expensive for our group, we’re also looking at a local mission to get involved in----know of any???  Come to our next Administrative Board meeting and visit with us about it!!!

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY:  We will once again be holding a Lenten Bible Study.  A possible study of “following Christ’s footsteps during those weeks of Lent” is being looked into.  Watch the bulletin for further updates!

Thanks to all who helped decorate and “undecorated” the church for the Christmas  holiday season!  Many hands do make light work!

At the January meeting of the Nemaha United Methodist Administrative Board, it was noted that only people attending the Board Meetings were not seeing our end of the year statements etc. so, it was suggested that we include them in the bulletin for others to see.  That is the reason for this insert! (Click Here to view ending 2011 Financial Statement.) I will also try to include this information in the mailings to our members not present today or that will be getting their annual “givings” amount via mail.  It is important to see how your monetary gifts are used to maintain our church, our missions and general operating expenses.  Please note that the Lord’s Acre & Hour was our best ever!! Amen!  Quite a bit of that was given to the General Budget with other amounts going to designated areas in the conference or local missions.  You will also note in the Capital Expenditures that our basement repairs was one of the main items but WELL WORTH IT!!

If you have any questions on this report, please feel free to visit with Martin Wedeking, our Financial Secretary.  And on that note, THANK YOU, MARTIN!!

Newsletter June 26, 2011

Nemaha UMC Sanctuary                   Plans have been made for our
125th anniversary celebration   •   August 7, 2011

Plan to join us for a morning of friends, fellowship and memories as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of our church. Church wervices will be held at 10:30 A.M. with a catered meal following. Plans at this time are to have the meal in the newly remodeled church basement.

The worship service will include a powerpoint presentation (otherwise known as a "slide show" for those of us not in the technology generation), favorite hymns, and some sharing of fond church memories.

The noon meal will be catered and will consist of: pork loin, cheesy potatoes, a couple different salads, dessert and drink.

Church Memories

We can use written and photographic memories of the church for our 125th Anniversary worship service on Sunday, August 7th.

Nothing is too small or insignificant. The few we've received have sparked other memories by those of us who have been reading them. Perhaps it's Sunday School, UMYF in the tower, church services, Santa, Snickers an candy canes at Christmas, weddings, funerals, ministers or just sitting with family during church services---send them our way!!

The Pastor's Post

Hello Everyone! It has been a long time since I have written any sort of newsletter, however, I am excited to get this one out in light of our upcoming quasquicentennial. Yes, Nemaha United Methodist Church is 125 years old and a bit smaller than it was in the "good ol' days" but still active in ministry.

Nemaha has a great tradition of being a teaching church in the state of Iowa as well as the home church to two pastors, including one United Methodist bishop--retired Bishop Dale Whilte, who currently lives in Connecticut. This past year we celebrated the continuation of this legacy of pastors by declaring my wife Luann a candidate for Ministry in this past charge conference. Luann will mark the third pastor and the first woman pastor to come out of Nemaha.

Nemaha has also taken the opportunity over the past couple of years to redefine what it means to be the church. Are we a church within a Mighty Fortress? Or are we a Mighty Church in ministry to the town of Nemaha and surrounding Community?

We have heard from Pete Peterson’s, Bob Dagit’s and Robert Runte’s on their intent to attend.  Possibly Cecil Lackore’s also. Anyway, I look forward to seeing and hearing from you this coming August at our upcoming celebration.

Pastor Carl K. Benge
Pastor of Nemaha UMC

June 26, 2011: Note from Alice: Thank you to all who have called, visited, or sent cards since my surgeries and my return home! I am doing well and enjoy visiting with people. Thanks again.
June 19, 2011: Joys: Nemaha UMC is sending five kids to camp this year. David Norris is advancing to head of Special Ed next year.

Congrats to Arnie and Kelly's daughters Nikki and Whitney on their recent engagements and upcoming marriages!

Concerns: Continue to keep Dana Courter in your thoughts and prayers. We are glad to hear he's home and on the road to recovery. Also keep Jim Bisenius (Schaller) in your prayers as he deals with health issues. Prayers were offered for Katie Benge, Alice, and Carolyn.
June 12, 2011: Joys: Thanks to Phyllis for landscaping the front of the church.

The Gale and Lorraine Davis Scholarship is in its 14th year. This year the award was presented to Luann Benge.

Concerns: Keep those who are ill, recovering from hospitalization, surgeries, undergoing treatments or are just unable to be out and about in your thoughts and prayers.

Prayers were offered for Dewey, Alice, and Carolyn.
