The children in the play had decorated the Christmas tree, then were joined by two more youth.

They listened to and talked about the story of Mary and Joseph finding room in the stable. The children added the figures to the creche as they were descirbed in the bible.

The living room scene was complete with a fireplace and stockings hung by the hearth. The youngsters sang Christmas songs to the congregation.

Vacation Bible School 2011

Nemaha United Methodist Church held Vacation Bible School in the church basement July 18 - 20th!
The students, teacher Luann Benge and assistants met each evening from 5pm to 7pm.
This year's theme was "Three Simple Rules for Bible School".

There were multiple lessons, stories, and activities for all ages of youth.

All local and surrounding area youngsters were encouraged to attend
even if this was not their primary church. Much fun was had by all children
as they learned the lessons of the Bible through tales, games, and crafts.

On June 26, 2011, Rev. Karen Dungan pressented the message. She is assistant to the Bishop for Connectional Ministries.

She offered insight into "Reconstruction Mission Work" both local and in other countries. Her message was welcomed in our area that is recovering from tornado damage and near major flooding along the Missouri River and other rivers where many people are in need of help.

The Connectional Ministries team of the Iowa Annual Conference is here to help local churches be more effective in mission and ministry, in your own communities and around the world. The Connectional Ministry Council is a network of groups engaged with the poor, with students, with social justice, with hands-on mission projects, and with disciple-making in all its many variations.

Each year one or more volunteers trim back the bushes, removes weeds, adds plants and flowers where needed to the garden in front of the church.

A special thank you goes to Phyllis Davis for landscaping the gardens in front of the church this summer.

The garden displays a variety of colors throughout the season. These photos were taken June 26, 2011 when more flowers had appeared.

Program by Dr. Jen Haden   •  June 5, 2011
Guatemala Medical Trip

Dr. Jennifer Haden presented a power-point program on her recent medical trip to Guatemala. She traveled to the Central American country with other medical personnel to administer first aid, medicine, and care to those who are unable to afford care or do not have access to medical facilities in the rural areas.

The people living there often had little to eat, primitive and unsanitary living conditions, and advanced skin, disgestive, and other diseases/disorders due to their lack of proper nutrituion and medical care.

The group traveled to a different location daily to serve as many areas as they could fit into their stay. That meant loading the large trunks of medical supplies on top of the bus, and traveling from 1/2 to 2 hours from the city where they stayed to the remote villages.

Where the volunteers were unable to help people with severe medical problems, those people were given vouchers that could be turned in to the nearest medical facility in the larger cities. Many of the people were so poor they might not even have funds for transportation to reach the larger towns even if their care would be paid for.

Dr. Haden showed many photos on the ceiling of the sanctuary of the people, the workers, and their surroundings. The children were more than willing to have their picture taken and soon learned they could view the photo on the back of the camera.

While the volunteer's hotel was modern and comfortable, they had difficulty finding foods during their stay that had not been washed with water that had bacteria intolerable to the visitors.

Dr. Haden answered questions after the presentation.

She is the daughter of Russ and Liz Davis and will be starting her residency in Sioux City.
