The Ecumenical Institute has its long-standing roots in decades of services provided by the state of Iowa to the mentally ill in the western part of the state. Typically there has been a diminishing number of those hospitalized, as well as a shortened length of stay. Outpatient services in the community have increased dramatically.

These combining factors, linked with the growth in community resources, led to the visionary formation of the Institute a decade ago. Its mission is to provide training and support to those in the community who are now taking over much of the traditional pastoral care services provided by institutional chaplains. The program currently focuses on providing the communities of this area with pastoral education services that are foundational for new pastoral caregivers, and also offers timely continuing education and support for experienced caregivers.

Community churches and local institutions are the primary source for gaining pastoral experience under supervision. The program is geared to assist in integrating already existing community services with providers who are more aware of and more connected with local resources as the obvious shift of care from institutions to the local community continues to progress. Laity and clergy of all denominations who live within driving range of the Institute's central location are encouraged to apply. Due to the nature of this model, only extended units of CPE can be offered. Please direct inquiries to the Executive-Director.
