People from neighboring towns were invited to bring their lawn chairs and come enjoy the free entertainment starting at 10:00 am. These first two short videos show the people sitting along the north side of the street just before the performance started.

Now we are ready to dance. This video shows the tractors moving in sinc to the music. The photographer almost jumped back when the ending move brought the front end of a Farmall very close to the camera.

This film clip shows the square-dancers in a typical move with the couples moving in a circle, their tires almost (and even sometimes) touching.

The Promenaders have learned a new square dance called the "teacup" and this is a view of part of that routine. Unlike other routines, they are sometimes paired in threes and singles.

After the performance, the drivers invite the crowd to come forward to chat and to get photos taken with the performers. There were two buses which brought residents of a Fonda care center and Park View Care center. The drivers used the opportunity to make the rounds and chat with those who had some in wheelchairs. One of the original organizers of the Square Dancing Tracters from the 1950s era, Mr. Cecil Boeckman, was among those in the audience.

I hope you enjoyed the clips.

Are there still Good Samaritan's around!
Rick and Shirley Gilson are a good example. During one 4-day period in August 2006, they participated in several examples of good will.

The first involved a local fellow who is a bit down on his luck but trying to improve his situation. But a stalled pickup jeopardized his job and Rick Gilson was one of the first volunteers to drive the man about ten miles to the pickup to see if he might be able to help repair it. The trip was not successful but Rick helped him get a tow truck and made sure the man got back to his home in Nemaha.

The next assistance needed was an elderly couple from Lancaster, Iowa passing through town when their car broke down. Rick and Shirley didn't hesitate a bit to offer the use of their car to the strangers so they could continue their journey and who promised to return it the next day when their mechanic would be with them to repair their car. They returned the next day with tears in their eyes in appreciation for these strangers who had helped them complete their trip. Their mechanic was able to repair the car and they happily headed home.

And finally, Shirley noticed a billfold laying alongside the road when out with her morning walking group. She contacted the person whose identification was inside and found it belonged to a young woman who lived 50 miles east of Nemaha who had filled up with gas at the Nemaha gas pumps. The billfold had been left on the fender of her car where it had dropped off not far from the gas station. Rick just happened to have a business appointment near the woman's home so offered to drop the billfold at the woman's house which was gratefully accepted.

And all this occured while Rick was sporting a forehead full of stiches from a work-related accident and corresponding black eye. Don't we wish all people were as kind as this couple?

Nemaha Milling Gets Repairs

Nemaha Milling Gets RepairsA fire erupted at the top of a leg in Nemaha Milling's grain transfer tubes in the week of July 20th, 2005. Both Nemaha and Early Fire Departments responded to the call and were able to put out the fire before it could spread to the grain storage bins. The fire had been quickly contained after a farmer living over a mile from Nemaha noticed the smoke and flames about dusk at the highest part of the mill. Replacement equipment arrived within two weeks and a crane was used to hoist the pieces in place on July 30th, 2005.

August, 2006 brought another needed repair. The large crane was again called for assistance and caused Railroad street to be blocked for a couple of hours while the repair to the top of the mill was completed.

Tour Buses Arrive for
Farmall Promenade Performance

Nemaha Tour Bus Performance
Tour buses scheduled several special performances of the Farmall Promenade. They bring travelers from around Iowa to Nemaha for full-dress performances of the square dancing tractors. This June 15th, 2005 brought three buses from the Fort Dodge and Ames areas.

Bleachers and benches had been set up for the riders with snacks furnished in the Community Building. Many local people also showed up for the performance.

Nemaha Tour Bus PerformanceThis is one of the three buses.

There were several photographers taking movies of the performance to be put on a documentary soon. Many of the local people also had their cameras going. The day was slightly overcast so the bright red of the Farmall "C" and "H" tractors do not show their true bright-red colors.

Farmall Promenade Girls
During the performance some of the "ladies" have a little difficulty with their clothing. Here one is jumping back into "her" skirt with the assistance of her friends.

Nemaha Park Has a New Fence

Nemaha Park
The Nemaha city council just approved installation of a chain link fence around the basketball court in the park. There are many informal basketball games and practice in the city park on main street year-round (weather permitting). When the old wood posts rotted that were holding the prior fence, the decision was made to replace the old fence with a maintenance-free chain link fence. It was installed in June, 2004.

Nemaha Jail

June 2004

Nemaha JailThe old Nemaha jail has been retired and placed next to the Historical Building on main street for all to view. It is a steel cage 3 by 7 foot and stands 7 foot tall. It was originally used in the City Hall/Firestation to temporarily hold person(s) until transport could be arranged to a more suitable jail. No current residents remember it ever being used for anything except perhaps a lost dog waiting for its owner to claim it. A couple of wood figures have been placed inside to complete the scene.

Nemaha Milling Harvest Scenes

November 2003

Corn Bunker
Nemaha's largest business, Nemaha Milling, runs out of inside storage every fall and stockpiles the excess corn in large piles. They start with the bunker located next to the buildings which fills rapidly.

Corn in field
The overflow corn is piled in a field on the southeast edge of town. While the pile is large, it gets hauled out long before the winter snows start.

Main Street, Nemaha, Iowa - February 2, 2004

Snow by Opera House
It only takes a little snow accompanied by cold weather to give Main Street a picturesque mountain scene. Volunteers with tractors and loaders or endloaders pile the snow beside the least-used buildings and there it will stay until spring thaw. The old Opera House is barely visible from snow piled in front of it.

View of East Main
View of the east end of Main street. This is a typical scene after a moderate amount of snow.

The snow piles keep growing as subsequent snow falls add to the volume.

Historical Building The Historical Building is coated with a winter coat of white. The snow pile in front almost reaches the bottom of the windows. The sidewalk is kept clear even if the parking is not.

Hazel's 70th birthday
Hazel Linsted, long-time operator of Hazel's Cafe in Nemaha celebrated her 70th birthday on March 17, 2004. She hosted a party with her restaurant overflowing with local people who came to show their appreciation for her being in business for the past thirty-six years and for many more years to come.

Hazel's snow-bound car

Between the snowfall and the street snowplows, Hazel doesn't do much winter driving. On warm days, Hazel and volunteers will be found shoveling her out till the next snowfall.

Hazel's snow-bound carHazel had her building resided since the above 2004 photo was taken.

Unfortunately, her car still has a problem in the winter as shown to the left of the building in this March 2, 2007 photo.

In fact, the day this photo was taken, NONE of the morning coffee drinkers made it in even though the coffee pot was on. Main Street was impassible most of the morning and the photographer waded through hip-deep snow just to get this photo.

Hazel's Birthday 3-17-2007

Hazel's still celebrating birthdays.
She just turned 73 on March 17, 2007,
