Current Nemaha Businesses At the present time these businesses are located in Nemaha and the surrounding area.
In the town of Nemaha:
|
North Side Businesses
The buildings and businesses on the north side of Main street are Gilson Energy service, the Historical Building, Post Office, former office for Nemaha Milling, the county garage & old Mill weigh station (not shown), and some of the Mill's storage bins. |
South Side Businesses The buildings and businesses on the south side of Main street start with the former Lumber Store (now privately owned) on the east end of Main Street.
The former office and workshop (not shown) are still standing and are west of this building. They are also privately owned.
|
| Next is the old City Hall Garage (privately owned), the new Fire Station with Community room in back, Olson's Garage, Hazel's Cafe, Nemaha Web Design, and the former Opera House now owned by Gilson Energy Service and used for storage. |
Cook's woodstock Dave and LuAnn Cook began handcrafting woodworking projects in an old garage on the home place where they first lived in 1984. In 1985 they purchased the old hardware store at 307 Main from Gerald (Shorty) Smith and moved the business there. In 1996, Dave hired Steve Crabb and together they built the current building at 1915 Needham Avenue. Today the business concentrates on custom-built hardwood furniture and fine furnishings for homes and commercial businesses. |
Gilson Energy Service Richard (Rick) Gilson decided to go into business for himself in 1977. He began his business in a garage at 117 North Third Ave with his wife Shirley as bookkeeper. Later they pruchased two lots across the alley to the south at 308 Main Street. In 1994 they built a modern 40' by 90' building on those lots. Rick has specialized in service, repair and installation of electrical systems in residential, commercial and industrial projects both locally and in other areas of the United States, Northern Ireland, England, Spain and Argentina. |
Hazel's Cafe
A restaurant has been in business in Nemaha since the early days. Food was first served at the hotel, then the former bank building, now known has the historical building housed the restaurant.Owner/operators have been Clarence Moore, Lloyd Haradon, Frank Neagle, Dick Jensen, Lyle Sanders and Phyllis Launspach. ![]() Hazel Linsted has operated it for over 30 years starting in 1968. She moved it from the bank building in her first year of operation across the street to the former grocery store building and has been there since. Hazel phased out the lunch service in 2005 and continues to sell beer, pop and snacks. She had the building re-sided the same year with a new front door added in 2006. |
Historical building The current Historical Building was built as a bank in 1907. It closed around 1925 or 1926 during the depression years and many depositors lost their savings. The building was sold to William Wedeking, Sr. in 1927 and was later converted to a barbership with the postal facilities in the basement. Later the main floor was used for many years as a restaurant. It stood empty from 1968 until 1974 when the newly organized historical society was deeded the property and converted it to a museum.
A Sac County Barn Quilt was added over the door in 2005 with the "Colonial Gardens" pattern. Howard Mentzer displays a Nemaha Barge Box Wagon which he restored beside the building during the summer months. These type of wagons were originally built in Nemaha. Howard Mentzer and Loren McBride spend a lot of hours volunteering their talents in maintaining the condition of the building along with other members of the community who always show up when there is work to be done. |
Nemaha Jail - June 2004 The old Nemaha jail has been retired and placed next to the Historical Building on main street for all to view. It is a steel cage 3 by 7 foot and stands 7 foot tall. It was originally used in the City Hall/Firestation to temporarily hold person(s) until transport could be arranged to a more suitable jail.
No current residents remember it ever being used for anything except perhaps a lost dog waiting for its owner to claim it. A couple of wood figures have been placed inside to complete the scene. |
Opera House - June 2006 The old Opera House is privately owned and used for storage. Rick Gilson, owner, installed a "Barn Quilt" on June 3, 2006.
Rick and Shirley hang banners inside the lighted doorway for all to enjoy. There is a different banner or flag each month to correspond to the current month's season or holiday. Just another example of the pride Nemaha folks have in their "Mighty Small Town". |
Nemaha MillingNemaha Milling was started around 1930. Frank La Grange helped farmers grind, crack, and hull their feed. When farmers purchased their own grinders there was less need for Nemaha Milling so Frank started Nemaha Concrete Products on the same site in about 1952. He made septic tanks and unit steps. When he retired, he sold the business to Dick and June Mooney on April 1, 1962. They later moved the Concrete business to Storm Lake.In 1970 Robert Neagle restarted Nemaha Milling as a grind and mixed feed business in the vacated Concrete Products building. Tom Jensen bacame a 50 percent stockholder in 1975. Dana Courter bought Robert Neagle's 50 percent in 1978 and Lynn Smith bought out Tom Jensen in 1994.

| The old elevator at the east end of Main Street was torn down in 1999 and replaced with grain storage bins. A new modern facility with office was built north of the Main Street buildings in 2001. The new mill was fully functional February 27, 2002. |
Nemaha Web Design The current old Hardware building originally started as a gas station and mechanic's shop. The front part of the building is newer than the cement block building that housed the shop. In the 1950's Gerald (Shorty) Smith used the building as a Hardware Store after outgrowing the old Opera House building next door. Dave and LuAnn Cook bought the building in 1985 and started Cook's Woodstock. After building their new building west of town in 1996, Marlys (Launspach) Waters bought the old hardware store building and named her second hand store "Ye Olde Hardware". In 2005, Marlys auctioned off her store inventory and started Nemaha Web Design at the same location. The building received a face-lift at the same time. A listing of the former businesses when the town was bustling in the early years can be found in the Nemaha Centennial Book. Copies are still available for $20.00 at Nemaha Web Design. |
