Joyce spent a lot of time on a lovely keepsake in researching the family ancestors, their origins, plus gathering all the recipes for the large cookbook available in 1991 following the Cousins Reunion in Galva, Illinois in June 1990.

Mortenson Family Tree (male side)

The spelling of names in Swedish is different than in English. Morton in Swedish is spelled Marten or Martin. Under the patronymic system, Nils Martensson and Peter Martensson were both sons of Marten. When they came to America the name became Mortenson.

      Walter was a soldier in World War I and was injured in France. He never married and passed away on 6 July 1937 in Galva.

Nelson Family Tree (female side)

We have two brothers marrying two sisters, Nels Mortenson married Christine Nelson in Sweden and Peter Mortenson married Catherine (Kate) Nelson in Galva, Illinois. The Nelson gals came from Inglestorp in Sweden to the Illinois/Iowa area.
There were five siblings:
Marten (returned to Sweden), Christina, Swan, Ellen and Catherine (Kate).

In Sweden, the boy's last names would have been Nils son, the girls - Nils Dotter which was changed to Nelson in America.

      Swan Nelson, brother to Catherine and Cristina, immigrated to America as a young man and took up farming in the vicinity of Galva, Illinois  (Section 31).
