Porches and Exteriors

19th century buildings often featured ornate trim and ornament which complemented the elaborate tastes of Victorian era. Even simple farm and row houses featured decorated porches, bargeboards, cornices and brackets that symbolized the growing prosperity in America. Although the Colonial Revival and the Arts and Crafts movements called for less decoration, homes still had distinctive styles that featured pediments, columns and bracketing.

However, many homes have suffered from poorly conceived attempts to modernize their appearance that destroyed much of their historical character. Architectural details were typically removed when houses were covered with asphalt or steel siding, soffit and fascia. Porches, with their distinctive fretwork, brackets and balustrades, were often enclosed or completely removed, destroying the historical character of the home.

Using period millwork catalogs, house plan books and the study of surviving examples, HDC can help you restore the character of your period home by assisting you in rebuilding or restoring damaged or enclosed porches and replacing exterior ornaments and trim. Using photos of your home we will produce a report with drawings, images and examples which you and your builder can adapt to your own house or porch design.
