19th century building styles were characterized by highly decorated doors and windows which complemented the elaborate tastes of Victorian era. Even simple farm and row houses featured decorated millwork that signified the growing prosperity in America. Although the Colonial Revival and the Arts and Crafts movements at the beginning of the 20th century called for less decorated millwork, doors and windows still had quite distinctive styles that characterized changing esthetic tastes.
During the last 100 years many homes have suffered from ill-conceived attempts to modernize their interiors that destroyed much of their historical character. Using period millwork catalogs, house plan books and the study of surviving examples, HDC can help you restore the character of your period home by assisting in the selection of doors and windows that complement its architectural style. Using photos of your home we will produce a report with drawings and images which will allow you and your builder to select the transoms, windows, doors and sidelights that your restoration project requires.
