![]() The Urban Plunge is March 19-21. This is the service opportunity we visited with you about at the beginning of the year and have been talking about with the kids at several of the meetings. As a reminder, here's a little bit about it: During the Des Moines Urban Plunge we will leave the comfort of our small town, and experience ministry in the inner-city of Des Moines; giving our group hands on experience with nine different faith-based social service agencies in one weekend. The Urban Plunge is March 19-21. This is the service opportunity we visited with you all about at the beginning of the year and have been talking about with the kids at several of the meetings. As a reminder, here's a little bit about it: Together, we will meet two needs in Des Moines: We will increase the volunteer capacity of local DM ministries. We are not starting a new ministry, but rather coming alongside existing Des Moines ministries to increase volunteers and financially supporting churches. We will engage followers of Christ to: “move out of the pews and into the streets.” The Plunge will mobilize us and plant the seed and passion for ministry and missions. This truly is not a “tour of poverty.” It leads participants to discover how they can use their passions and talents to make a difference for Christ; providing hands on leadership development for this generation that wants so much to be like Christ. Cost/ Details: The cost is $35 per person (the total cost per person is actually $95 but the UMYF is paying for $60 of your fee.) This covers your housing, food and a facilitator. A minimum of 10 participants is required. We start Friday around 4:30 and go until Sunday early afternoon. So our group will have to leave around 1:00 on Friday. This means the students will have to work with the school and their teachers to get class work made up before we go. |

The Early UMYF met on Wednesday, September 2 for our kick-off meeting of the
year. John and Norma McDonough took the kids on a horse drawn hayride and then
we enjoyed a campfire, roasting marshmallows and making smores. After singing
several campfire songs and talking about the upcoming year, Robin shared the
passage from 1 Timothy 4:12. We talked about "never letting anyone look down on
them because they are young but to use their life and actions to be a witness to
everyone."
