We raise Tim Kuehler in our prayers. He will be going for tests on January 6 for a heart-related concern.
 
Heavenly Father,
 
We lift Tim to you and ask you to surround him, Amy, and their families with your love, strength, support, and care. Let the tests be successful and any health concerns identified, treated, and healed. Be with the medical professionals, giving them wisdom and compassion. We know all things are possible with you, Lord, and seek your favor on Tim and ask for his healing.

Grant patience to Vicky as she is confined to her sick bed. Bless the doctors, nurses, and all who minister to Vicky. Let Your holy will be done among us to Your glory. Amen.

For Jeff Zadow, Frank Zadow's grandson. He is in San Antonio, TX for a business meeting and started feeling ill. They took him to the hospital and they have so far determined that it something with his heart. His mother, Diane, is flying down to be with him. She has had three heart procedures since the first part of October. Please keep them both in your prayers.
 
Dear Father in Heaven, We come before You on behalf on Jeff who is ill. Grant strength and healing. Guide him not only with doctors who are blessed with healing skills, but also with members of the body of Christ, the Church, that they may impart the healing gifts of love and hope. Let your gracious will be done. Also be with Diane as she travels to be with Jeff and with her own health problems and with Allan as he remains at home. Attend them all with a full measure of your grace, that faith may be strengthened, hope confirmed and love increased. Unite us all as a family gathered about Your throne, praying for one another. In Jesus' name. Amen

Heavenly Father,

We raise Cory to you and ask your healing touch be upon him. Surround him with your love, fill him with your spirit. Be present for Mindy and their young family as well Lord, giving them strength and wisdom, along with the measure of peace only you can provide. We seek your wisdom for the medical professionals the Millers will encounter, fill them with your grace and let them be compassionate caregivers.

Dear Friends,

What an incredible surprise we received at the 125th Anniversary Celebration.† A surprise that brought with it a flood of memories as we recalled where we started as Youth Leaders and the journey God took us on through the years as we became attentive and responsive to HIS call.

This ministry was fruitful because of the participation of the youth and the support of their families and this congregation.

We pray that during our years as leaders, God used us to plant seeds that will one day be fruitful in bringing and leading others to Christ. The rewards have truly outweighed the challenges.

It is with grateful hearts that we humbly thank each and everyone of you that organized and kept the "secret"; for the monetary donations to be used toward the development of the "Prayer Garden"; the "Sparkling Gems' book of daily devotions, which we have already found to be a helpful tool†in deepening our relationship with Christ;† The "Willow Tree Angel" and the "Life is Fragile Handle With Prayer" plaque are tangible reminders of your generosity; the Special Mission recognition submitted by the UMW in our names;†not to mention the many notes from† MYF members recalling your†memories; and your presence with your hugs and conversations.†

We have truly been blessed!!!

Your encouragement throughout the years was without a doubt Christ working through you to strengthen us.†

Prayer request:
For Everett Huisenga-He was admitted to Loring Hospital yesterday with health issues.

Almighty God, Father of us all, I come to You in behalf of Everett. If it is Your will, restore him to health and reunite him with the family. Grant patience to Everett as he is confined to the sick bed. Bless the doctors, nurses, and all who minister to Everett. Be with Ardola and the rest of his family and give them your peace during this trying time. Let Your holy will be done among us to Your glory. Amen.

We raise the family of Wilford Wulf in our prayers upon his passing this morning. Wilford, of Holstein, is Ann Trimble-Ray's uncle.
 
We also life the Harold Woodke family in our prayers upon his death. Services for Harold will be Saturday at 11 am at the Nemaha UMC.
 
Heavenly Father,
 
We commend these souls to you. We rejoice in Wilford and Harold's release from pain and illness. As they leave their earthly home, we ask you to be present with their families who mourn their loss.
 
Amen.

December 2, 2008

For Ernie Porath, Newell, he has been dealing with what they thought were breathing problems for a year and half and now have found out that it is his heart. He has been at Mercy in Sioux City and now is being sent to a nursing home in Ankeny, near his son, for rehab. Please pray for God's mercy and sustaining grace during this time and if it is God's will that he will get strong enough to return to his home.
 
Eleanor Mentink called to ask for prayers for Pastor Mentink. On Thursday this week he will have back surgery at St. Luke's in Sioux City.  Please pray for guidance of the surgeons that the surgery may go as planned and he will have a good result to relieve the pain he has been having.  Please ask that God is with Eleanor also as she cannot be with him due to her disability and Pastor wants her at home safe. May God bless him with a speedy recovery so he can be at home with his wife.  He has been in a care center for the past 6 weeks.
 
For Wayne Nissen of Nemaha, brother of Connie Severson, who was in a serious auto accident this weekend. Please pray for God's healing power to be with Wayne and his family, as well as for the medical staff caring for him at Mercy in Sioux City.

We also lift Heather Mansfield (cousin of Tonia, neice of Betty) in our prayers as she is experiencing troubles with her pregnancy.
 
Heavenly Father,
 
We come to you knowing you possess the power to solve all ills, repair all wounds, heal all illness. We ask you to be with Hadan and Heather. Touch your healing hand upon them, let them know the comfort, peace, strength, and love only you can provide. Be with their families as well as their caregivers. Surround them with your presence and wrap your loving arms around them. We give you the honor, glory, and praise for your might acts. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
 
P.S. The flamingoes have flown south! Be watching for the return of the UMYF pink flamingoes to a yard near you this spring!
 

December 2008 Newsletter

Carter Joseph Wright, infant son of Cody & Emily Nees Wright of Holstein, was baptized during the morning worship hour at the Early UMC on Sunday, November 16. We welcome our newest child of the Kingdom to our family of faith.

Pastor DeeAnn & Congregation of Early UMC…I just want to express my heartfelt thanks for the very special way you entertained Bishop and Mrs. Trimble and other members of his team who came to visit you on Nov. 19. You were able to explain in a very effective way the life and ministries of our church there. Everything was perfect and full of grace and love. We enjoyed your stories of ministry and were inspired by your renewed enthusiasm to move forward with the Lord. I know that some of you had to excuse yourselves from work in order to be there. I also know that there were others who tried getting off from work but did not succeed. Words are not enough to express my joy and thanks about all of you. Bishop and Mrs. Trimble, Linda and I, and also Bob Burkhart (assistant to the Bishop) and Sarah Stevens (NW FOM) will not forget this visit. Again, I am proud of all of you. Keep it up for the Lord. Martin “Speck” Blass, age 101, of Early, IA, passed away at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, on Monday, November 17, 2008.

Services will be 10:30 am Friday, November 21, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Early, IA. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Friday, at the United Methodist Church.

Martin Joseph Blass was born to George and Kathryn (Hoefling) Blass on November 14, 1907, in Sac County, Iowa. He was born in to a large family and had 8 brothers and sisters; Anna, Charles, Clara, Elmer, John, Leonard, Ione, and Eleanor.

He met and fell in love with Wilma Helena Hooper and they were joined in marriage on February 23, 1935, in Early, Iowa. They made their life in Sac City and Early where Speck was a farmer and also raised livestock. Their farming operation included cattle, hogs, and horses. This union was blessed with 4 boys; Joseph, James, Ted, and Timothy.

Martin was fortunate to live a long life and remained living independently until only his last few years. He enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, playing cards, reading, and following both college and pro sports.

Those left to cherish his memory are sons: James (Gloria) Blass, Sac City, IA; Tim Blass, Early, IA; daughters-in-law: Virginia Blass, Sac City, IA; Delores Blass, Shreveport, LA; grandchildren: Kellie (Kent) Highland, Sac City, IA; Matt Blass, Sac City, IA; granddaughter-in-law: Gale Blass, Sac City, IA; grandson-in-law: Dennis Perryman; great-grandchildren: Amy and Craig Blass, Sac City, IA; Jay and Jamie Highland, Sac City, IA; Bailey Blass, Lake City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents George and Kathryn; his wife Wilma Blass on January 1, 2005; children: Joseph and Ted; grandchildren: Brian Blass, Jolene Blass Perryman, Ty Blass; siblings: Anna, Charles, Clara, Elmer, John, Leonard, Ione, Eleanor; father-in-law: Oscar Hooper; mother-in-law: Margaret (Huiseman) Hooper Bing; and brother-in-law: Franklin (Sonny) Hooper and wife Eunice.

We lift Butch Schmidt in our prayers today as he will have surgery at 10 am to remove bone spurs in his neck and have work done vertebrae there as well. The surgery will take place in Sioux City and is tricky.

We ask you to be with Butch as he goes into surgery this morning. Surround him with your love, give him peace, and see him safely through the procedure. Guide the surgeon's hands so they will be skillful and successful. Give all of Butch's medical team skill, wisdom, compassion, and grace as they

Jerry Irwin's surgery went well Wednesday. When Sharon left the hospital last night, Jerry was running a pretty good fever so please continue to keep him in your prayers.
 
Father in Heaven, Thank you for the gift of skillful hands and minds which have been used in behalf of Jerry. Thank you for the gift of care, kindly administered through nurse, doctors, aids, and orderlies. Thank you for easing pain. Make Jerry comfortable. Help him recover. If it be Your will, grant Jerry a speedy recovery. Strengthen Jerry in spirit as well as in body. In Jesus' name. Amen.

We lift prayers of joy and thanksgiving for the success of the Schaller Crestland girls' volleyball team. Please see the note below:
 
In case you haven't heard yet....the Schaller Crestland volleyball team won their match last night in 4 games over Southern Cal!  They are going to State! 
 
It was a great night!  The fire trucks and a whole caravan of fans met the player bus outside of town and escorted them into and through town to the school. 
 
Team members from our church include Ashley Struchen, Kaitlin Franken, Lynn Ann Fuhs, and Erin Wissink.

For Jerry Irwin. He will be having hip replacement surgery on Wednesday morning at BVRMC.
 
Dear Father in Heaven, Go with Jerry to the surgery. Guide the doctor's hands so that his work may be done skillfully and quickly. As Jerry's Great Physician, grant that all his trust may be in You and that Jerry may have no fear. As Your forgiven child, bring Jerry safely through these next hours. In Jesus' name. Amen.

For Pastor Lee Mentink-former pastor of Faith, Early. He is in BVRMC, Storm Lake, with severe back pain.
No pain pills have helped to relieve the pain at this time. We also ask for the Lord's blessings on Mrs. Mentink as her disability keeps her from being with him.

We remember Margaret Schramm (one of Faith Lutheran's organists) and her family at the death of her mother, Irma Zimmerman. The funeral is Saturday at Sac City. We also remember Marian Drey, as she had major surgery in Sioux City on Thursday.
 
Dear Heavenly Father, Please be with and comfort the family of Irma Zimmerman at this time of her death. Give them your strength and comfort at this time and in the days and weeks ahead. Please be with Marian Drey, following her surgery yesterday. Give her your comfort and care, and guide the doctors and nurses as the minister to her at this time. If be your well grant her renewed health and give her your peace during this time.

We celebrate new life tonight with the arrival late this afternoon of Addison Marie Jeffrey, daughter of Megan (Freese) and Troy Jeffrey of Omaha, sister of Savana and Landan, granddaughter of Larry and Dawn Freese, and great granddaughter of Jo Haley. (Please note the spelling of Addison is not confirmed yet!) All are doing well though Addision was checked out due to a little concern over her breathing.
 
Heavenly Father,
 
We praise and thank you for the news of the arrival of Addison. We glorify the miracle of life and offer our gratitude for the health of baby, mom, and family. Surround them with your love, cover them with your protection. Let Addison know from her first breaths how precious and loved she is.
 
All these things we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

For  Sharon Irwin who was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center by ambulance yesterday. She will have further tests today  to determine if she has blockage in the stint she had put in last spring.
 
Dear Lord, Your heart was so full of compassion for the sick and suffering when You were here in human form. Your care means so much to those who are ill. May it be Your will to grant Sharon a full recovery. Whatever be Your will, sustain Sharon and trust in You. Enable us to ease her discomfort by cheerful and loving service. Hear me for Jesus' sake. Amen.

We raise Sharon Irwin in our prayers. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital this morning with suspected heart problems.
 
Gracious God,
 
Be with Sharon and lay your healing hands upon her. Let her know your presence and feel the strength of your love for her, your child. Surround her family with your care as well, providing all they need to be supportive of her. Give her doctors and care givers your wisdom so they know the proper actions to take so she may be restored to wholeness in you. These things we ask in Jesus' name. Amen

For Jerry Hurd who was burned in a combine fire last Friday. He has 2nd degree burns on his face and 3rd degree burns on his hands. If everything was going okay, he is to have surgery today to graft skin from his legs to his hands.
 
Dear Father in Heaven, Go with Jerry to the surgery. Guide the doctor's hands so that his work may be done skillfully and quickly. As Jerry's Great Physician, grant that all his trust may be in You and that Jerry may have no fear. As Your forgiven child, bring Jerry safely through these next hours. In Jesus' name. Amen.

We raise Diane Zadow of Altoona in our prayers. She suffered a heart attack yesterday and went immediately to the cath lab where a stent was put in. Diane is daughter-in-law of Frank Zadow. In addition to Verna's recent passing, Diane's father passed away earlier this year as well.
 
Heavenly Father,

We ask you to wrap your loving arms around Diane, Allen, Frank, and their family as she recovers from the heart attack she suffered. Place your healing hands upon her, restoring her to health. We give you the glory Lord for your presence in our lives and for your providence.
 
All these things we pray in Jesus' name. Amen

For Louanna Massey, Leila Smith's sister in Missouri, she is quite ill and headed for the hospital. Also for John Moul, Huxley, David Irwin's father-in-law. He had a heart attack this morning and was taken to hospital in Ames.
 
Dear Lord, Your heart was so full of compassion for the sick and suffering when You were here in human form. Your care means so much to those who are ill. May it be Your will to grant Louanna and John a full recovery. Whatever be Your will, sustain Louanna and John's faith and trust in You. Enable us to ease their discomfort by cheerful and loving service. Hear me for Jesus' sake. Amen.

How to Pray Effectively
by Rick Warren

Please remember what you told your servant Moses: "If you sin, I will scatter you among the nations." Nehemiah 1:8 (NLT)

Here are four secrets to answered prayer from the life of Nehemiah:

1. Base your request on God's character. Pray like you know God will answer you: "I'm expecting you to answer this prayer because of who you are. You are a faithful God. You are a great God. You are a loving God. You are a wonderful God. You can handle this problem, God!"

2. Confess the sins of which you're aware. After Nehemiah bases his prayer on who God is, he confesses his sins. He says, "We've sinned." He says "I confess . . . myself . . . my father's house . . . we have acted wickedly . . . we have not obeyed." It wasn't Nehemiah's fault that Israel went into captivity. He wasn't even born when it happened and he was most likely born in captivity. Yet, he's including himself in the national sins. He says, "I've been a part of the problem."

3. Claim the promises of God. Nehemiah prays to the Lord, saying, "I want you to remember what you told your servant Moses." Can you imagine saying "remember" to God? Nehemiah reminds God of a promise he made to the nation of Israel. In effect, he prays, "God, you warned through Moses that if we were unfaithful, we would lose the land of Israel. But you also promised that if we repent, you'd give it back to us."

Does God have to be reminded? No. Does he forget what he's promised? No. Then why do we do this? Because it helps us remember what God has promised.

4. Be very specific in what you ask for. If you want specific answers to prayer, then make specific requests. If your prayers consist of general requests, how will you know if they're answered?

Nehemiah is not hesitant to pray for success. He's very bold in his praying. Have you ever prayed, "Lord, make me successful?" If you haven't, why haven't you? What is the alternative? A failure?

Is it okay to ask God to make you successful? It all depends on your definition of success! I believe a good definition of success is: "Fulfilling God's purpose for my life in faith, love, and the power of the Holy Spirit, and expecting the results from God." That is a worthy life objective that you should be able to pray for with confidence.

Consider this: If you can't ask God to make you a success at what you're doing, you should be doing something else. God doesn't want you to waste your life.

We also lift up Jim Meyer of Odebolt who was involved in a tractor accident this afternoon and was life-flighted to Mercy-Sioux City. He has two broken ribs on one side and one broken rib on the other.
 
And we have a joy - Pastor's daughter, Anna, and her husband, Rob, have returned to their home in Houston and found it largely untouched by the hurricane. A few shingles missing, a fence down, and tree gone. Water damage in the house was very minimal.
 
Great and gracious Lord, you know the needs of your children and we ask that you provide for all Jim needs as he recovers from this accident. Surround him, Madeline, and their family with your love, providing strength and comfort. And we raise our praises to you that Anna and Rob found their home intact upon their return to Texas. All honor and glory are yours, heavenly Father, who we give thanks and praise. Amen

Continue to pray for the Christians in India. This update was received last evening.
 
"Believers are still in hiding in the jungles.  The Hindus do not want Christians living in Puri as it is a religious center for Hindus.  Please continue to pray for the Orissa District Christians." "The Hindus are still threatening to kill the Christians if they come out of hiding and Christians have no food and water in the jungles.  Thank you for your prayers.  A mass killing has still not happened and for that we praise the Lord.  I will keep you posted."

Thank you for your continued prayers as it seems that this conflict will go on for some time.  Pray for their physical health (water and food needed), that God will sustain them spiritually, that the enemy will be bound, that
Christians will be invisible to the Hindu radicals, wisdom for Christian leaders, for peace in the region, and that the faithfulness of believers will be a"lighthouse" for those in the darkness of Hinduism and for God to be glorified.        

Also keep Verna Zadow in your prayers as her health continues to deteriorate.
 
Dear Father, Please stay with Verna and Frank and their family as her health declines and her time to join you and all saints in heaven comes closer. Give them all your comfort and strength in the days ahead. Give Verna your peace and if it be your will keep her from a great deal of pain. We place her in your hands, as you know what is best. For Todd Bettin, son of Faith Lutheran's pastor. He is a veterinarian at Lake View. He was injured Friday afternoon. He had surgery on his left hand to repair the damage. Today he has infection in his hand.
 
Dear God, We pray for the family of Todd and for Todd as they go through this time of injury. Remove anxious fears and worries, and give them grace to trust in You. Let them know that You do supply all their needs and You do care for them each day, giving strength to carry on. You are their loving God. We thank you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Keith L. Domino

Keith L. Domino, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa and formerly of Early, Iowa, died Thursday, August 07, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Keith L. Domino was born October 25, 1921 to Homer and Elizabeth (Ridler) Domino. He attended Eden Township School in Sac County, Iowa, and later transferred to Early Public School, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He then attended the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City and graduated in November, 1941.

Keith was employed at the Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha, Nebraska before he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He then went into farming in partnership with his brother Mars.

On January 16, 1946, Keith was married to Shirley Drewry at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Omaha. To this union two children were born: Greg and Colleen. Keith and Shirley lived all their married life in the Early – Nemaha area.

Keith loved all aspects of farming and devoted his whole life to it. He especially loved to feed cattle, sheep and hogs, and enjoyed buying and selling the livestock. In later years, he enjoyed gardening and caring for his fruit trees. He shared much of his produce with family and friends. Keith also enjoyed quiet time spent reading books. He was a 50-years-plus member of the Early United Methodist Church and a Past Patron of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed playing cards with his grandchildren and watching college and NBA basketball games on television.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; an infant sister, Bambi; his sisters Blythe Domino and Marjorie Adams; and his granddaughter, Bethine Lens.

He is survived by his son, Greg (Marilyn) Domino of Schaller, Iowa; his daughter, Colleen (Jim) Lens, of Burlington, Iowa; three grandchildren: Joshua (Jill) Lens of St. Louis, Missouri; Stacey Lens of Chicago, Illinois; and Chris (Nicole) Domino of Early; two step-grandchildren: Molly (Tom) Mohr of Cherokee, Iowa; and Ryan (fiancee Susie) Bainbridge of Paullina, Iowa; many great-grandchildren; his brother, Mars (Donna) Domino of Sac City, Iowa; sister-in-law Anne Willert, also of Sac City; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

We offer prayers of thanksgiving and praise for Jodi Bihrer's successful surgery. They chose to go with the major surgery vs. laproscopic and were glad they did. Kristi reports Jodi is doing well and everything went as expected.

Thank you for your many blessings and amazing grace. We ask you continue to hold Jodi and his family in the palm of your hand. Pour out your healing power over him and wrap them in the love of friends and family. We thank you for giving the doctors and nurses skill and wisdom. All glory and honor are yours. Amen.

Jodi Bihrer is scheduled for prostate cancer surgery in Rochester on Friday. Let's keep Jodi, Kristi, and their entire family in our prayers as they plan for this and the follow-up which will result.

We also need to keep David (Doc) Mertz and his family in our prayers. Dave has been diagnosed with cancer in the brain, although the doctors don't think that is where it started. He had surgery and the surgeons feel that they got it all. He will start radiation in two to three weeks.

Almighty God, Father of us all, we come to You in behalf of Dave and Jodi. Bless the doctors, nurses and all who minister to Dave and Jodi. Be with their families and give them strength during this time, too. Let Your holy will be done among us to Your glory. Amen.

We lift Bill Determan in our prayers as he is in the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha where they are running tests. While this does not appear to be related to his cancer, we remain aware that he is in his ninth month of chemotherapy treatments. He is expected to be moved out of ICU today to a regular room. We remember Susan, their family, and the caregivers searching for the cause of his hospitalization.
 
Gracious God,
 
Be present with Bill through this time providing strength, comfort, and care. Surround the Determan family with your love, giving them reassurance that all things are possible through you. Give Bill's doctors and other staff wisdom so they might treat him appropriately and restore him to wholeness. All these things we ask in the name of Jesus our savior, Amen.

Pastor Mentink is a former pastor of Faith Lutheran.

On Wednesday of this week Pastor Mentink will go to Dakota Dunes in N. Sioux City and have an injection in his back to attempt to relieve the pain he is dealing with at this time. He may be fitted with a brace too. May God be with him and give him relief from his suffering. Please also pray for Mrs. Mentink as she has physical limits and depends on Pastor for much of her care.

May God be with them both through this trial and give him a speedy recovery.

Today we raise Tom Snyder in our prayers. Tom and Kathy returned from the east coast to Early then Tom became ill again. He went to the hospital in Sac yesterday then was transferred to Sioux City where he is now undergoing surgery. He has infection in both his blood and bones, a high temp, and they want to find out where the infection is coming from.
 
Gracious God,
 
Watch over Tom and his family. Pour your healing graces over him, surroud them all with your love and strength. Be with the doctors as they work to locate the source of his infection, giving them wisdom and compassion in the mission. Installation of Pastor

   Pastor DeeAnn Klapp was formally installed as Pastor of the Early and Odebolt United Methodist Churches on Sunday, July 6, 2008.  Observance of Independence Day  and Pastor's Installation was held at 10:00 a.m. during a Joint Worship Service with the Odebolt UMC in the Courtyard at the Early UMC.  We welcomed District Superintendent, Bernie Colorado, as our guest speaker. 

       Following the worship service, everyone was invited to a time of fellowship and a Picnic Style Lunch served in Furrow Memorial Hall.  Guests brought a salad or dessert to share.  Grilled burgers, beverages, and table service were provided

Verna Zadow came through her procedure okay today. The surgeon was able to get the stent in the bile duct.
 
Father in Heaven, Thank you for the gift of skillful hands and minds which have been used in behalf of Verna. Thank you for the gift of care, kindly administered through nurses, doctors, aids, and orderlies. Thank you for easing pain. Make Verna comfortable. Help her recover for this procedure. Strengthen Verna in spirit as well as in body. In Jesus' name. Amen.
 
Pastor's Garden Makeover is continuing. Work has been ongoing since last week's workday - and another will be scheduled next week. Jobs include planting and moving dirt so all kinds of help is needed! Be watching for an announcement.
 
Also, to complete the project, they are looking for rocks (flat and round) in softball and baseball size. A pick-up load in total is needed. If you can help with the rocks, please contact Jack Hogue at Prairie Pedlar.

We raise Tillie Drey in our prayers. She was taken by ambulance to BVRMC this morning then transferred to Fort Dodge. She is experiencing leg pain and will be having tests to determine what's occurring.

Dear Lord, Your heart was so full of compassion for the sick and suffering when You were here in human form. Your care means so much to those who are ill. May it be Your will to grant Klint a full recovery. Whatever be Your will, sustain Klint's faith and trust in You. Enable us to ease his discomfort by cheerful and loving service. For Tracie Shelbourn, Shirley Gilson's niece. She has been running a fever for a week, been tested for West Nile Virus and they still don't know what the problem is. She has two small children. They have put her in the hospital today.

Well it has been an extremely anticipated day that ended with not so good news. We just got back the MRI results and the doctors found a blood clot on Patrick's brain. There is swelling on Patrick's brain but they do not think that it is caused from the blood clot. The doctor gave us two options. The first option was to we could go and do surgery and remove part of Patrick's skull to remove the blood clot, which may or may not solve the problem. The doctor did say that if they removed the skull and the brain started to swell that they weren't sure if they would be able to put the skull back on the brain. The other option was to wait to do the surgery and get another CT scan to see if the blood clot increases in size. Patrick has significant injury to all parts of his brain and especially the brain stem. They are many blood clots and swelling in the brain stem . Because of the impact of Patrick's fall his brain had shifted 5 milimeters. When they did the MRI, Patrick's brain had shifted 9 milimeters, which the doctors can't understand because he is responding more to pain stimulus now than before. The option that we are looking at is waiting the couple of days to do another CT. We want to make sure that the blood clot is either decreasing or increasing before we put Patrick through a surgery that may or may not help him. We are still praying for our miracle and we need all the prayers we can get. Continue to keep Patrick in your thoughts and prayers. We will update you on any new information.
Devin Mentzer, son of Jeff and Dawn Mentzer, announced on Sunday his family has registered online to help flooding victims in eastern Iowa. When called upon, they will be asked to serve meals, or help in homes, public buildings, or other places with "light" duty labor. They registered as "Early Helpers" and invite others to join their team. Please contact the Mentzers to volunteer. They do not know when they will be called upon to go help at this time.
Gracious and Loving Lord,
We petition you on behalf of all those mentioned here. Provide for each what is needed, let each know they are loved by you and supported by their Christian family. Surround those named and their families with strength, comfort, and wisdom. Bless them, their caregivers, and their mission. Provide your healing and sustaining power so each would know your presence. We place those named in your hands, Heavenly Father, for your protection and blessing.

We rejoice that a liver was located for Austin Demers and arrived in Omaha at 9:30 this morning. They expected surgery to last most of the day today.
 
No news regarding Patrick Carlson this morning. We do know friends in Early and at VT in Holstein are (or soon will be) collecting donations to assist with expenses for Patrick and his family as they are camping near Rochester to be near him.
 
Next Wednesday, June 25, young Landan Jeffrey, grandson of Dawn and Larry Freese, will have surgery to repair the holes in his little heart. We praise the Lord for sending the new specialist to Omaha and for the scheduling of surgery which has been anticipated for weeks.
 
In the midst of anxiety and uncertainty we can be assured of God's presence and love for his children. Read and pray these words from Psalm 98 and be comforted:

You are the source of all that's good and holy in our lives. We ask you to heal these young men. We lift up Patrick for your care. And we raise Austin to you for your intervention as well. Meet their needs, Lord, giving each what is needed to be restored to wholeness. Let your will be done. It is our earnest prayer you shower Patrick with your healing graces. Help us to trust in you, for your will to be done, for our understanding of that will, and acceptance. We call upon you to be with Patrick, his doctors, and family. Be their strength, their comfort, and inspiration.

Today we lift up all those Boy Scouts impacted by last night's tornado at their camp near Blencoe. We ask the Lord's blessing on the four young men who lost their lives and his healing graces for the dozens injured as well as other survivors.
 
Gracious God,
 
We intercede for all those affected by the severe weather last night. You know the needs, the injuries in need of healing, the terrors in need of calming, the broken hearts in need of mending. Good and loving Lord, cover each with your blessings. As witnesses to your grace, lead us to provide whatever is needed in the recovery from these tornadoes and flooding in our region.
 
In Jesus' blessed name we pray, Amen.

I have been thinking of collecting a car ["truck" if I can locate one] load of supplies and delivering it to the Wolterman's Implement this coming week.  If you would wish to be a part in helping me help Parkersburg, please either email me to come pick up your items or bring them to Faith Lutheran Church on Sunday, June 8 between 8:45-10:15am.  Thankyou for your help and generosity.  Sincerely,  Ellie Feilmeier

Bill & Sheila Cougill became parents of a son, Jacob Jay, on Friday, May 30, 2008.  He weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz., and is welcomed home by his parents and big brother, Ryan.  Our congratulations to the happy family!  May their lives be full of love and God’s blessings!

Today we lift the family of Gene Cedar of rural Meriden in our
prayers. He died very unexpectedly Tuesday night. Gene's wife is the
former Donna Mentzer, daughter of Don and Helen Mentzer and cousin to
many in our church family. Services for Gene will be Saturday in
Cherokee.

Sherri Kowalke's sister, Kathy, died from a brain tumor on Thursday. Cliff Carlson, formerly of Early, had a heart attack and is in Mercy Hospital in Sioux City.
 
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for receiving Kathy into Your glory. Comfort the family of Kathy with glorious hope of the life eternal. Grant them grace to know that "Your will is done" and that Your will is good and gracious even at the hour of death. Strengthen and help weary and troubled loved ones. We ask for Jesus' sake. Amen
 
Dear Lord, Your heart was so full of compassion for the sick and suffering when You were here in human form. Your care means so much to those who are ill. May it be Your will to grant Cliff a full recovery. Whatever be Your will, sustain Cliff's faith and trust in You. Enable us to ease his discomfort by cheerful and loving service. We lift the family of Mary Feldhoff in our prayers. Mary passed away this afternoon following an eight month battle with pancreatic cancer and a week long hospitalization. Mary's husband, Bryce, was a college classmate of Robin Wissink and Ann Trimble-Ray. The Early UMC provided a prayer shawl to Mary early on.
 
Heavenly Father,
 
We trust Mary unto you, knowing you have relieved her pain and restored her to wholeness. Be with those she left behind, helping to ease their sorrow and wrapping your loving arms around them, providing strength, comfort, and renewal.

Trustees Notes - May 2008 Newsletter

        A new and exciting time has begun for the Early United Methodist Church!   An Energy Efficiency, Electrical Code, and Architectural Study was completed by Energy Design Associates (EDA) of Sioux Center in March of 2007.  With the funds from the Endowment Fund and the generous gift from Sandy and Ona Furrow, many of these improvements will be realized in the near future.

     Paul Park Construction of Storm Lake has completed the insulation on the north wall of the sanctuary and insulating the overhead ventilation system.  The steeple clock was removed, repaired, repainted, and reinstalled with a new protective glass.  New columns have been ordered and will be installed at the south entrance of the church.  Additional projects include replacing the cement around the pillars and front door and replacing some windows and doors throughout the educational and sanctuary areas. The Trustees are currently getting bids for replacing the shingles and adding insulation to the sanctuary roof in order to make the building more energy efficient.

     Other priorities for the coming year are evaluating related component efficiencies of the boiler and new lighting for the educational unit.

     We look forward to seeing these many-needed improvements become a reality, and we thank those who are responsible for the change at Early UMC.  By our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service, may we all be a part of this structural upkeep of the Lord’s house.

We raise the family of Don Mentzer in our prayers. Don passed away on April
21 and a funeral is taking place today at the Odebolt Presbyterian Church.

We also lift up Betty Schmidt upon the death of her mother, Helen, last
night. Funeral services will be this Saturday at the Marcus (Iowa) United
Methodist Church at 2 pm. We remember Betty, Butch, Tonia, Bob, Jodie, and
extended family upon their loss.

Heavenly Father,

We celebrate the lives of these your children. We grieve their loss and
remember the joy they brought to the lives of all they touched. Be with
these families, guide, guard and protect them as they take the next steps on
their journey.

Let us be humble servants focusing on sharing our fith and the many blessings your have bestowed upon your children.
 
As we grow in faith, walking with Jesus, and seeking opportunities to serve, guide is in the right direction. Help us to see the needs around us. Grant us favor that our actinos would be honoring to you and your will. Let us respond joyfully to your call to serve our neighbors.

We lift Jim Engle in our prayers. He recently had laser surgery to fix a hole in his retina and will have another couple of check ups this week.
 
Remember the Lord is a loving God who hears his children when they pray and answers those prayers. Read these words from Psalm 98 and be comforted and inspired to worship!

We raise the family of Gene Petersen in our prayers. Gene passed away Saturday evening after a long battle with cancer.
 
We also lift the family of Tami Hoeppner whose grandmother, Pauline, passed away.
 
We continue to pray for Ruth Steele who remains in the hospital with some improvement.

We lift Jodie Schmidt in our prayers. Jodie is dealing with a staph infection and we raise her to the Lord asking for his healing touch to be upon her.
 
We also remember the family of Mark Cook of Wall Lake. Mark passed away on Saturday after suffering from cancer.
 
As we pray for these people and the circumstances of their lives, remember the words of Psalm 24:

We raise a joy for Dan Determan. On Tuesday evening, Dan received a Senior Leadership Recognition Award. Only 10 are allowed each year - and this year, only eight were awarded. To qualify, the recipient must be nominated by more than one organization and have more than one faculty advisor recommendation. Dan has served as general co-chair of ISU Homecoming and is the entertainment chair for this year's VEISHA celebration, to name just a couple of his activities.
 
Just as we lift our concerns to the Lord, it is appropriate to bring our joys to Him as well! Read these words from Psalm 9:1-2:
 

I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
       I will tell of all your wonders.

I will be glad and rejoice in you;

We lift Ruth Steele in our prayers as she was taken to BVRMC this afternoon. Right now we know they were concerned with dehydration and her kidneys not functioning properly. Please pray for Ruth's health, for relief from any discomfort she may experience, for compassionate care by her doctors, nurses, and staff at the hospital. And we lift Ruth's family in our prayers as well, asking for strength, comfort, and peace of mind for each of them.
 
No matter the challenge - no matter the circumstances, we know God's love never fails. He will provide for Ruth and her family, meeting every need. Read these words from ROmans 8 and take courage in the  promises of an everlasting God and merciful Savior:
 
If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:

We raise Landan Jeffrey (grandson of Larry and Dawn Freese) in our prayers. His pediatric cardiologist told his parents, Meg and Troy, there are complications due to Landan's blood clotting disorder which will require further study and exploration of the best method for repairing his little heart. We pray for wisdom and discernment for Landan's doctors and the colleagues they will be consulting for treatment options. We ask for God's protection for Landan as this process moves forward, guarding him from further complications, surrounding him with love, peace, joy, and hope. For Landan's family we ask for strength, comfort, and confidence knowing God's grace is greater than any need we have.

Our confidence and trust in God should be complete, without fear and without worry. The same God who created us also sent his Son to save us. That love made tangible through Christ's life, death and resurrection, sustains us when all else fails. Read these words from Hebrews 1:3 and remain in Him in prayer, study, and faith. He will provide!

The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Arthur Lee Mason
Services for Arthur Lee Mason, age 83, of Early, are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Early United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 4:00 – 8:00 Monday, April 7, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City where there will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m.

Arthur “Lee” Mason, age 83, of Early, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Lee was born on May 24, 1924, on the Greenbush Farm near Early, Iowa, the son of Elmer Duane and Clara (Baxter) Mason. He graduated from Early High School in 1941 and was united in marriage to Joyce Mentzer on March 10, 1946. Three sons were born to this union: Richard, Randall, and William. Joyce passed away on May 6, 1995. Lee married Hallie Woolrich in June of 1996.

Farming was his life. He looked forward to each spring with great anticipation waiting until it was just right to plant his crops, watching them grow and keeping them weed free, followed in the fall with each harvest. Farming was his life but his family was his love. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He treasured his children and grandchildren and loved their family gatherings. Coffee with the gang at the restaurant, playing cards and a round of golf gave him great joy. He will be remembered for his ready smile and sense of humor.

Lee was a member of the Methodist Church in Early and the Wheeler Masonic Lodge No. 398 A. F. & A. M. of Odebolt.

Survivors include his wife Hallie; his three sons: Richard Mason and wife Jan of Early; Randall Mason and wife Mona of Storm Lake; and William Mason of Odebolt; three step-children: Jackie Jones and husband Richard of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Robert Woolrich and wife Ronnie of Olympia, Washington; and Brad Woolrich and wife JoAnn of Albuquerque, New Mexico; five grandchildren: Jill (Jared) Hemphill, Joshua (Becca) Mason, Ashley Mason, Justin Mason, and Christopher Mason; five step grandchildren: Aaron Woolrich, Chelsea Jones, Lora Jones, Kyle Woolrich, and Andrew Woolrich; and one step great-granddaughter Isabelle Adams. Other survivors include his sister Dorothy Ehler and husband Gerald of Sac City; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce; and two brothers and their wives: Donald and Helen Mason and Robert and Mary Louise Mason.

Del Blass passed away this morning. We lift Jackie and their family in our prayers, asking the Lord to shower them with his comfort as they say goodbye to their loved one. Services are pending.
 
We also remember Bob Rohlfsen and his family in our prayers upon the death of his mother, Laura. Services for Mrs. Rohlfsen are tomorrow morning in Calument.
 
Services for Lee Mason are expected to be Tuesday afternoon. More details will be sent when available.
 
Gracious God,
 
Surround your children who are grieving the loss of loved ones today. Be with them in this time of sorrow and help them to find comfort in your promise of eternal life granted to all who believe. As your disciples, let us be messengers of peace to these families, helping to meet their needs.

We raise our prayers for the family of Lee Mason who passed away at 5:30 this morning. His earthly journey is now complete and he is now restored to wholeness, health, and new life with his Heavenly Father in heaven. We lift Hallie, Rich and family, Randy and family, Bill and family, as well as extended family in our prayers, asking our beloved Lord to surround them with his love, comfort, and reassurance of eternal life for all those who believe.
 
As we remember Lee's life, we take comfort in scripture where we read from Psalm 34:
 
1  I will extol the LORD at all times;
       his praise will always be on my lips.

 2 My soul will boast in the LORD;
       let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

 3 Glorify the LORD with me;
       let us exalt his name together.

 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
       he delivered me from all my fears.

 5 Those who look to him are radiant;
       their faces are never covered with shame.

 6 This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;
       he saved him out of all his troubles.

 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,
       and he delivers them.

 8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
       blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

 9 Fear the LORD, you his saints,
       for those who fear him lack nothing.

 10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
       but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

       I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

 12 Whoever of you loves life

Prayer Request for Shelley from Milford. She is a good friend of our daughter, Becky. She has been diagnosed with uterine cancer and will be having surgery next week. She is 36 years old and the mother of 5-year-old twin daughters.  Sharon
 
Our Heavenly Father, Please be with this young mother and her family at this troubling time. Be with Shelley and give her your strength and comfort before, during and after the surgery. Give the surgeon knowledge and skillful hands for this surgery. If it is your will, restore Shelley to health and reunite her with her family. In Jesus' name. Amen.
 
I talked to Tammy Nuckolls today and her sister, Susie, came through the brain surgery well yesterday. They were not able to remove all of the cyst because it was too close to the memory part of her brain. She was doing pretty good today.
We give thanks to God for this successful surgery.
 
Also keep Lee Mason and his family in your prayers as the end of his life on earth draws near.

We lift up Lee Mason in our prayers this evening as he is being admitted to the hospital in Storm Lake. (He was accepted into Hospice late last week.) We ask God to be a source of strength for Lee and his family, asking that his discomfort be minimal and his care extravagant.
 
As we seek God's intervention on Lee's behalf, read these words of Psalm 25 where we find the promise of a faithful Creator who will meet every need:
 
 1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;

 2 in you I trust, O my God.
       Do not let me be put to shame,
       nor let my enemies triumph over me.

 3 No one whose hope is in you
       will ever be put to shame,
       but they will be put to shame
       who are treacherous without excuse.

 4 Show me your ways, O LORD,
       teach me your paths;

 5 guide me in your truth and teach me,
       for you are God my Savior,
       and my hope is in you all day long.

 6 Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love,
       for they are from of old.

Urgent Prayer request. For Tammy Nuckolls who is flying to Phoenix today to be with her sister who is in intensive care. Her sister, Susie Caseraz, doctors have found a cyst in her brain and it is leaking.
 
Dear Father in Heaven, We ask You to watch over Tammy as she travels today to be with her sister. Please insure her safe and efficient travel. We also ask you to be with the doctors and nurses who are ministering to her sister, Susie. Give them skill and knowledge to deal with this situation effectively. Give Susie the assurance of your grace and love that she may have no fear. If it be your well bring Susie safely through these next days. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

We praise you most merciful Lord for loving us enough you would shower your grace and mercy upon us. In raising Jesus, you wiped the slate clean for all of us. He who was truly sinless took our sins with him to the cross where he was nailed. With his resurrection we receive new life, new opportunity, and a new mission to be ministers of the Gospel.

Precious Jesus, our Savior and friend, we rejoice at your triumph over death. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for your sacrifice and we wait for the day we can bow at your feet to say thank you. Let us reflect your love to all we encounter, sharing the good news of salvation with all who will hear. Give us courage, give us wisdom, and give us boldness so we can be your disciples.

We are so unworthy. Forgive us for being less than you call us to be. Show us your will, gracious God, so we follow the right path. Strengthen our faith, so when we are tested, we honor and glorify you.

Today we lift up the Mohr family as Rosemary passed away this morning.
 
As we mourn this earthly loss, we remember that our heavenly home is awaiting where pain and suffering no longer exist and we are restored to fullness of life with Christ Jesus, our Savior.
 
Read Paul's words from Philippians 3:7-11 and be comforted during this Holy Week:
 
But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. Praise Him and his son, Jesus, who was obedient to death on the cross. Through Jesus' resurrection we all are cleansed by simply believing in Him. Amen.

For Tom Stewart. He is a quadriplegic with minimal use of his arms and hands. He is to have surgery Wednesday morning for a torn rotator cuff on the arm he has the most use.  He will be virtually helpless for two-three months.
 
Dear Father in Heaven, Go with Tom to the surgery. Guide the doctor's hands so that his work may be done skillfully and quickly. As Tom's Great Physician, grant that all his trust may be in You and that Tom may have no fear. As Your forgiven child, bring Tom safely through these next hours. Give him strength and patience in the coming months. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Please keep Hilda Kuehler, mother of Tim Kuehler in your prayers as she undergoes surgery at the Spencer Hospital tomorrow. She has infection in her big toe and will have to have part of her toe amputated.

 

For Rosemary Mohr - she was taken to Loring Hospital and transferred to Fort Dodge. At this time they think it is her gallbladder. Uplift her and those who care for her in prayer.

 

Give prayers of praise for Kayla Irwin. She had an ovarian cyst and it ruptured sometime later Friday. She is now back home and feeling much better. She is to see her doctor for a follow-up in six weeks.

 

Blessed and Loving Lord,

 

We raise to you these joys and concerns, knowing you provide all that is needed for each circumstance of our lives. When we are brought low, you lift us up. When we are on the mountaintop, you sustain us and cushion the landing when needed. Joys
  • Dick Wadsley was at worship this morning, having recovered from knee replacement sufficiently to join us!
  • Jodie Schmidt has a new job! Her long search is over and we praise God for bringing this opportunity to her.
  • Luke Brinkman, son of Mike and Steph, received a very good report last Friday at a check up and they anticipate a complete recovery.
  • Our weather has turned warm so we can begin melting away the ice and snow underfoot and under our wheels.
  • Our UMYF enjoyed their trip to Lincoln where they took part in the Dare to Share conference.
Concerns
  • We ask God's presence and strength for Betty Schmidt's mom.
  • We remember Katie Ehrp who goes to Iowa City again this week and is scheduled for surgery on Thursday.
  • We raise up Anita Coon who is beginning cancer treatments.
  • We seek God's mercies for Mary Ann Gard.
  • We lift up Yvonne Higgins, asking that all she needs be provided.
  • We request God's protection for Pat Feilmeier who learned he will be deployed to Iraq in April. At the same time we pray for all members of our military whether at home or overseas.
  • We pray for all those who have recently lost loved ones including Jean Blass and Pat Carstensen.
  • We continue to ask God to be with our youth as they face the struggles and stress of their teenage years. Give them wisdom, courage, and be with them, Jesus.

Pastor DeeAnn shared an important message with us today, reminding us there is no power on earth or in hell below which can overtake the power of our Creator, our Lord and Savior, or the Holy Spirit. Together in prayer, we can access that power which exceeds all other powers. Calling upon the holy name of Jesus, praising God, and inviting the Holy Spirit into our circumstances will turn back other powers and unleash the majesty of the Most High God.

For Jerry Berg- He is in intensive care at BVRMC. They drained his lungs of fluid. One lung is collapsed and the other is filling right back up with fluid. His health has been fragile for some time.

We raise Armin Christiansen in our prayers today. He was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and is scheduled to begin weekly chemotherapy treatments on March 12. We lift Armin's family in prayer as well. We rejoice that this is a very treatable cancer and for their very positive outlook.
 
Lord of us all, we ask your healing touch be on Armin. Give his caregivers wisdom, compassion, and skill. Surround Armin and his family with your unfailing love, grace and mercy. Amen.

All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us. We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too.

  • UMYF trip to "Dare to Share" in Lincoln was joy-filled and the leaders report hearts were transformed. We praise God for his grace with these leaders and youth.
  • Schaller Crestland did very well at individual speech contests yesterday - all participants earned firsts and will go on to state! Thank you, Lord, for your blessings of talent for these students.
  • We appreciate the warmer days, sunshine, and melting! Jesus, just as you are the light of the world, we praise God for the beauty of his creation.
We shared these concerns:
  • Matthew Iwinski, Pauline Jones' grandson, continues to need our prayers as he recovers and tests are on-going. Merciful Father, be with Matthew, his family, and his caregivers. Give them wisdom and patience. Grant to Matthew your healing powers so he may recover.
  • Pat Feilmeier, son of Ron and Marge, received orders that he will return for another tour of duty in Iraq. Gracious God, we lift up Pat Feilmeier, and all members of our military. That they might know your protection and comfort as they serve. Guide and guard them as they offer freedom to the oppressed.

A prayer chain for Todd and Teresa Bettin of Lake View. Todd was working in a building this evening and had a heater going. He got sick from carbon monoxide. Teresa was going to take him for help and she fell on the ice and broke her ankle. They were both taken to a hospital (at this time we don't know which one).
 
Dear God, We pray for the family of Todd and Teresa and for them as they go through this time of injury. Remove anxious fears and worries, and give them grace to trust in You. Let them know that You do supply all their needs and You do care for them each day, giving strength to carry on. You are their loving God. We thank you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Luke, the son of Mike and Steph Brinkman, was involved in an accident at their home this morning and has been life flighted to a hospital in Omaha with a possible skull fracture. We raise Luke to the Lord for care and healing. We also ask comfort, care, strength, and for his parents, caregivers, and grandparents.

We lift up the family of Rozella Bruns, including niece Dawn Freese and her family, in our prayers. Rozella passed away Tuesday evening and funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 am at the Alta UMC. Rozella has achieved peace and entry to her heavenly home. Praise God for sending his son, Jesus, assuring our salvation and eternal life with Him, free from pain and the bonds of this earth.

Today we lift up Matthew Iwinski in our prayers. He is the 15 year old grandson of Pauline Jones (Gail's son). At school yesterday, Matthew collapsed and was completely unresponsive. He remains in the ICU at a Sioux Falls hospital today as tests are being conducted to determine the cause of his collapse.
 
We ask our gracious and loving God to be with Matthew, his parents, and Grandma Pauline, providing strength, comfort, care, and healing. We also seek the Lord's wisdom for Matthew's care givers.

We raise several requests to the Lord for his attention this evening.
 
First we offer praise for the large group which gathered for the "When God's People Pray" Bible study led by Pastor DeeAnn this evening. We rejoice for the open hearts and minds gathered to praise God, study his Word, and fellowship together.
 
We raise our prayers asking for the safety of all those who will be traveling on Thursday when snow, sleet, wind, and cold will be causing stress.
 
We lift up Katie Ehrp who will be undergoing tests in Iowa City tomorrow for an ongoing medical issue. While not life threatening, it is a concern and one we ask the Lord to watch over, providing wisdom for the doctors, strength for the Ehrps, and the blessings of restored health.

Pastor DeeAnn began a sermon series on prayer during worship this morning, sharing inspiration, knowledge, and practical advice for the Christian seeking to deepen their prayer relationship with God. She shared the acronym ACTS with us as a guide to prayer:
 
A - adoration
C - confession
T - thanksgiving
S - supplication (requests of God)
 
Pastor further stated the two purposes of prayer:
1. To be in relationship with God
2. To give God glory
 
As we journey through the Lenten season, we will keep our focus on prayer. This includes a weekly Bible study led by Pastor DeeAnn, "When God's People Pray." This Bible study will be held on Wednesdays at 6 pm.
 
Read these words from scripture:
 
Acts 4:32
 32-33The whole congregation of believers was united as one—one heart, one mind! They didn't even claim ownership of their own possessions. No one said, "That's mine; you can't have it."

They shared everything. The apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them.

Philippians 2

He Took on the Status of a Slave

 1-4If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart,

if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don't push your way to the front; don't sweet-talk your way to the top.

Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don't be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

We lift up prayers today for Jean Blass and her family upon the death of George this morning. Visitation will be Monday with services Tuesday afternoon at the Early UMC. In the midst of our grief, we remember this child of God with a ready smile and celebrate a life well-lived.

5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
       my hope comes from him.

 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation;
       he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

George R. Blass

George Robert Blass, age 91, of Early, IA, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008. Burial was at the Early Union Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
 
George, the son of Chris and Elizabeth (Bettin) Blass, was born August 22, 1916, at Early, IA, where he resided all his life.  He was a graduate of the Early Consolidated School.
     
He married Jean Peterson at the Methodist Church in Correctionville, IA, on April 1, 1950. To this union four children were born:  Christy, Chuck, Juli and Lori.
    
George has been a member of the Early United Methodist Church for 57 years and the Sac County ASCS Committee for 25 years.  He served on the boards of the Farmers’ Home Administration for three years, Loring Hospital for ten years, and Crestland Community School for nine years.
    
George loved to farm, continuing his passion till the age of 87.  He was an avid bowler and liked to “putt” around on the golf course.  Playing cards with friends and family was a lifelong enjoyment.  Not being a travel enthusiast, annual Okoboji trips brought the family together where George could be seen go-carting still at the age of 90! Other family trips included California, Oregon, Colorado, Hawaii, Jamaica, and Florida where he loved the oranges and lemons.
    
Those thankful for having George in their life, include loving wife, Jean; children and their spouses: Christy and Dick Swenson of Lake View, Chuck Blass of Early, Juli Blass and Jim Lynum of Silverthorne, CO, and Lori and Brian Blass-Adams of Ft. Myers, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Barb and Cory Weber, and son Brayden; Jenny and Jimmy Stock, and son Gunnar; Ashley Blass; Erik Blass; Callie Blass; Ché and Tiffany Lynum, daughter Telana and son Kai; brother Delmer Blass and Jackie of Early; sister Marjorie Blass of Denver, CO; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Mae Blass of Sac City, Annabel Camarigg and Bonnie Kummer both of Correctionville, and Nyla and Mark Markusen of Long Beach, CA; brothers-in-law: Roy Headid of Sioux City and Chuck Peterson of Correctionville; many nieces and nephews; extended family members; “adopted granddaughter”, April Peterson; and many friends.
    
George was preceded in death by his parents; brother Raymond Blass; sisters Dorothy Dick and Delores Headid; parents-in-law August and Lillian Peterson; and brother-in-law Bob Peterson.
 



Endowment Committee Report - Feb. 2008 Newsletter

It seems somewhat ironic that these words will reach you only days after we learned that an extremely generous gift has been given to the EUMC. God has blessed us almost beyond imagination. May His blessings shower down on those giving to our church!

     As most of us are aware, there has been some construction activity at the church in recent weeks. Most of this work has focused on insulating and making improvements, that will make the building easier to heat. I think those attending worship on recent Sundays would agree we already have a warmer sanctuary. The endowment committee pledged approximately $45,000 in funding for these higher priority projects, and while this type of work is the sort the fund was meant to support, we can’t forget the “maintenance” of this fund. Fortunately there have been faithful stewards in the past who have contributed to the endowment fund and thus provided a means which allows us to address our most serious building concerns.

     While the gift mentioned above is not to be invested in the endowment fund, I hope we will all pray that this same gift serves as an example to each of us rather than an excuse not to share what God has so graciously given to us. As Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:19-21, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth…store your treasures in heaven…Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

     Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians, chapter 8 that the amount we give is not as important as how and why we give. We are to give out of dedication to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and do so joyfully!

     Deuteronomy 16:17 says, “All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.”

     The endowment committee asks that each of us prayerfully consider not only how to replenish this fund but how every member can show God the praise and glory He so deserves!

We raise Pat Carstensen's mother, Jean, in our prayers today. She suffered a severe stroke this past Friday and is now at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Jean has limited brain activity and is unable to swallow. Pat and his brother, Mike, are with her and will soon determine the course to take moving forward.
 
We also lift up Anita Coon in our prayers. Anita was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and additional tests are being conducted at this time. We remember her, and her family, by name to the Most High who is able to work wonders and miracles.
 
Let's turn to God's Word, reading from Psalm 18:
 
13 The LORD thundered from heaven;
       the voice of the Most High resounded. [c]

 14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies ,
       great bolts of lightning and routed them.

 15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
       and the foundations of the earth laid bare
       at your rebuke, O LORD,
       at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

 16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
       he drew me out of deep waters.

 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
       from my foes, who were too strong for me.

 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
       but the LORD was my support.

Friends,

We lift up Dick Wadsley in our prayers as we learned today he had knee replacement surgery last week and has been recuperating at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. He is expected to return home in the near future. We ask for prayers of healing and for good fortune with all the snow and ice.

We also raise prayers for all those who traveled yesterday and especially those who were not able to reach their destinations. We praise God for the hospitality of friends and strangers who assisted those in need to a place to stay - including Robyn Padgett whose restaurant became a B&B last night!

We thank you, God, for all the mercies you show us each day. Be with us, protecting us from harm and healing our brokenness. To you we give thanks, honor, glory, and all our worship - in spirit and truth.

  • Willing hands who helped with our soup luncheon and auction - including specifically Steve and Barb as well as Jodi and Kristi
  • The Furrows who have generously given a significant gift for our building - what an amazing and unexpected sign of God's grace intended to further prepare our church for the growing and exciting ministries taking place
God is so good. He saw our needs, heard our prayers, and is responding in an unbelievable fashion. We are truly blessed and called to meet the challenge of spreading the Gospel. As we continue our prayer ministry, ask the Lord to inspire our hearts to service and to nurture our revival which is ongoing.
 
All praise, honor and glory be to God, our Father, Jesus, our Savior, and the Holy Spirit, our guide. In all days and in all ways acknowledge and honor them.

We lift up Dean Cuthrell in our prayers as he experienced burns on his face this Monday. We ask the Lord to be with him during the healing process and for his retinas (which were slightly affected) to be fine.
 
We also raise up Matt and Katie Ehrp's family upon the death of Matt's aunt, Dianne Ehrp, of Schaller. Dianne's funeral will be at the Schaller UMC tomorrow.
 
And we ask the Lord's blessings on our annual church fundraisier. Our silent auction and soup luncheon will be Sunday, January 27. Soup will be ready for an early lunch following worship. Invite friends, family, and neighbors to join us for food and fellowship as well as bidding on lots of great treasures!
 
Let us remember that in all circumstances - pain, loss, poor health, and celebration - our purpose is to worship God who makes all things possible and assured our salvation through the birth and death of his son, Jesus, our Savior. All glory be to God and his Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

Today we remember the Grell family of Galva upon the death of Ryan and his funeral today.
 
We also lift up Tillie Drey who fell this weekend and experienced a head injury. She has been hospitalized in Storm Lake as she recovers.
 
And we raise up Bill Musselman's family, including son, Ray, upon his death this morning.
 
As the cycle of life continues, we search for God's comforting presence and the joy of his unconditional love for all his children.

Friends,
 
We lift up little Owen Worthan who was taken to the hospital in Sioux Falls by ambulance yesterday afternoon. We pray for his healing, strength and comfort for his parents, Gabe and Emily, as well as for his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family.
 
We know God will provide. Our mission is to seek his grace through prayer and by studying his Word.
 
We find these words of comfort in Romans 5:
 
1-2By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us—set us right with him, make us fit for him—we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. And that's not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.

 3-5There's more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we're hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we're never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can't round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!

Marlys SnavelyFriends,

We lift up Marlys Snavely's family in our prayers this evening upon her passing today. She has left her earthly bonds and escaped the torment of the disease which filled her last days.

Marlys Ann Snavely, 72, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2008, at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake. Marlys Ann Smith was born February 4, 1935, to James E. and Hattie (VanDenburg) Smith in Armstrong, Iowa. She attended school in Estherville, Ware, and Pocahontas, Iowa, graduating in 1953.

She was united in marriage to Gene Kirchner from 1955 to 1984. She later married Art Snavely and they were married from 1986-1994.

Marlys worked for the telephone company in Storm Lake, Mankato, and Phoenix, retiring in 1994. She moved to Early, Iowa where she enjoyed working for the Methodist Church. She lived in Storm Lake for the last years.

She enjoyed her hobbies of reading history and anything that was true, sewing and quilting, and her computer.

Survivors include her brother, Duane E. Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Marlene (Keith) Thurman of Waverly, Iowa, and Mrs. Janet Heald of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilma Smith of Hardy, Arkansas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James Ronald Smith and Byrl Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, January 8th, at the United Methodist Church in Early. Burial will be at the Early Union Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

The visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, at the church, prior to the funeral service.

We turn to God's word in this time of loss where we find this passage from the Gospel of John:

John 14

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

Jesus the Way to the Father

 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
