Early United Methodist Church
Administrative Council - May 19, 2010

EARLY UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH
ADMINISTRATIVE
COUNCIL
MAY 19, 2010
The meeting was opened by John Weber with Ann
Ray leading in prayer. Pastor DeeAnn was absent from the meeting as she is with
her mother who is experiencing serious health issues.
Minutes of the April meeting were read and
accepted.
Ann Trimble-Ray presented the financial
report. May’s income to date was $3,625.81; expenses paid were $3,273.81; paid
to Mid-American $300; specials $52. Year-to-date giving $31,971.25; expenses
year-to-date $27,961.21; Mid-American $1,900 and special offerings $2,003.50.
Ann reported receiving a call from Pastor DeeAnn today regarding her mother’s
health issues and what they had learned from the oncologist following her
mother’s appointment today. She did receive a positive diagnosis of cancer,
possibly brain cancer. Treatment had not yet been finalized. If she needs to
stay with her mother during her treatment, Pastor has asked the District
Superintendent for family leave which she will determine as necessary. The
Council extends its concern to Pastor DeeAnn and will work with her decision.
Herb presented his treasurer’s report stating
the checking, savings, and CD balances. The only outstanding bill is for $469.39
to Mid-American. Herb reported that both Gala and Gennifer are home as of
today. Gennifer has undergone the procedure to draw stem cells which will be
used in Gala’s cancer treatment.
Rich Mason reported on the finance meeting held
prior to Ad. Council. Ann had received a donation to the Prayer Shawl
ministry. It was suggested that the money be given to Jo Haley to purchase more
yarn for her to use in making the shawls. Ann will be attending Annual
Conference June 5-8 as an equalization member at large. Marla Nees will be our
Lay Delegate to Conference. It was decided to give her $150 to be used at
Conference for the many offerings that are taken or for meal expense—whatever
she sees fit to use it for.
Deb Galvin reported for Outreach Committee.
They will continue asking members of the church to take meals in to Gala and her
family while she undergoes her cancer treatments and stem cell transplant this
summer. June 26th our UMYF will return to Des Moines to take part in the Urban
Plunge. They will need 12 dozen cookies to take with them, so a sign-up sheet
will be sent around in church.
Randy Galvin represented SPPR Committee. June
6th is Iowa Annual Conference Sunday when all Methodist pastors and many laity
speakers will be in Des Moines for Conference. Pastor DeeAnn had suggested that
we worship with our Presbyterian friends that day. Their service also begins at
9:00 a.m.
Jeannette Weber reported VBS is being planned.
Donations will be needed for snacks and crafts. Sunday School kids have set up
a library in one of the Sunday School rooms and have arranged some donated books
which can be checked out by anyone who finds books of interest. September 12th
will be Christian Ed Sunday and 3rd graders will receive Bibles and
Sunday School teachers recognized.
Anita Mason reported church membership stands
at 146 which includes the four recent confirmands—Anthony Bainbridge, Aaron
Cuthrell, Ryan Garthoff and Eric Mentzer. The Endowment fund showed a small
gain again this month. She stated she had sent flowers from our church to the
Sanford Furrow family. A representative stopped recently to leave information
about carillons in case we would be interested in upgrading our system which no
longer works and is quite outdated.
The Memorial Committee looked at and suggested
the purchase of 4-6 chairs to be used around the conference table in the
pastor’s study. No definite decision was made tonight. Color selection may
hinge on possible new carpet in the study and/or the hallway.
Jan Mason reported for the Trustees. Bids were
received for replacing the soffit above the courtyard walkway in front of the
Prayer Garden and also replace several pieces of fascia which have blown off the
upper trim of the church. The low bid for the soffit work was from Mark
Schmitt. Other matters brought up by the Trustees were needed repair to the
urinals in the men’s restroom; repair or replacement of the double doors in the
hallway outside Furrow Hall and replacement of a cracked window in the pastor’s
study. Trustees will review the money remaining in the Furrow gift account and
re-prioritize our list of possible improvements.
Mary Lou stated UMW held their meeting on
Saturday, May 15th. No meetings will be held during the summer.
June 13th is the date set for the dedication of
the Prayer Garden. This will depend on the situation of Pastor DeeAnn and her
mother’s health issues.
The meeting was closed with all praying the
Lord’s Prayer.
