EARLY UNITED METHODIST
CHURCH
ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL
November 17, 2010
Pastor DeeAnn Klapp opened with prayer and Chairman John N
Weber called the meeting to order. Steve Determan asked for permission for the
Early Achievers 4-H Club to use the church for their overnight lock-in November
19-20. Jan Mason moved and Jeannette Weber seconded a motion to allow them to
use the church – ayes all. The 4-H Club is asked to set up tables before they
leave for the funeral luncheon on Saturday as well as the UMYF pasta dinner on
Sunday.
Ann Trimble-Ray, secretary pro-tem, read the minutes of the October meeting
which were approved as read.
Trustees Chair Jan Mason said they discussed several projects including Ida
Grove Roofing’s repair near Furrow Hall. Steve Determan will be looking into a
wall mount for the LCD projector used for worship as well as other options for
the technology used every Sunday. The door to the newly completed bathroom in
the narthex was found locked and no key is available so a replacement knob/lock
will be installed. The bathroom is finished other than the need for some trim
around the sink. Lighting for the church sign is not complete yet. Neil Mason
contacted Paul Park Construction about the new doors near Furrow Hall having an
air leak as well as a leaking radiator in the new restroom in the narthex.
The Trustees also briefly discussed several projects to be considered in
2011, including, lighting in the educational unit hall, carpeting in that hall,
ideas to remodel the sanctuary to make it more friendly, future of the asbestos
tile in the sanctuary, possible concrete parking south of the church,
replacement of the sidewalk to the entry to the educational unit, and a light on
the east side of the church.
Finance Chair Rich Mason said year-to-date total giving is $63,285.12. The
Committee discussed the annual Silent Auction and set the event for January 30,
2011. They will be looking for a couple or couples to take charge of the event.
They also briefly discussed a fundraiser to help pay the expenses for the Mt
Zion Baptist Choir performance set for March 26th. They suggested an
omlette breakfast for February. Rich also said the Committee is considering
paying 100 percent of 2011 apportionments from savings after the first of the
year.
Anita Mason said membership stands at 140 following the death of Ervin
Nielsen this week. She also said the endowment fund balance at the end of
October had a gain of about $7500 over the previous month, however, performance
this month is not good.
Ann Trimble-Ray said the Crooners performance is scheduled for December 19
at 2 pm at Faith Lutheran Church. It was mentioned the Storm Lake Area Messiah
performance will be December 5 at 7 pm at Schaller Chapel.
Jeannette Weber said the Sunday School Christmas Program will be December
19th immediately following worship. She will talk with the worship
team about how to transition between worship and the program appropriately. All
youth of the church are involved in the program this year – Sunday School and
UMYF. The need for adults to lead music for the Sunday School was discussed.
Jeannette also suggested we publicize our Christmas Eve service in the
community. After discussion, it was decided Ann will make posters for hanging
around town and we will ask to have a notice in the City of Early’s newsletter
distributed to all households.
The lack of a resident pastor in Early and the consequences when it comes
to meeting needs of transients, emergencies, and other needs was addressed.
Jeannette suggested a group of lay leadership from each of the churches in the
community be formed to handle these issues. Ann suggested the possibility of a
once-a-month benevolent offering being taken to fund such needs. More discussion
will follow after the first of the year and Pastor will talk with Father John as
well.
Pastor said there are five faithfully attending the Bible study on James on
Tuesday evenings. She encouraged more to attend. The Schaller Crestland
Ministerial Association’s Thanksgiving Eve service will take place on Wednesday,
Nov. 24, at 7:00 pm at the Schaller Presbyterian Church. Pastor would like to
invite Margaret Therkelson to offer a prayer workshop at the Early UMC this
spring. As a memorial to her parents and grandparents, Pastor asked about the
possibility of purchasing a clock for the narthex. By consensus, she was give
permission to do so. In 2011, 5th Sundays will be in January, May,
July, and October. We will need pulpit supply as those are Pastor’s weekends
off. She plans to exchange the May Sunday for the last Sunday in April due to
weddings.
It was noted the Trustees and Finance Committees will not meet in December
unless necessary. By consensus, Ad Council also decided not to meet in December.
The meeting closed with all members saying The Lord’s Prayer.
