EXITPhotos from the Early Quasquicentennial
|
| This photo gallery includes photos from the Tractor Pull held the last day of the Quasquicentennial weekend. Photographer apologizes for not being able to stay to the end of the pull. Click on Results to jump down to view the Tractor Pull Results. Tractor PullThe Tractor Pull was held south of the Elevator at Early, Iowawith 10:30-12:30 Weigh In. The Pull started promptly at1:00 pm. First entry was a Farmall driven by Jason "Spot" McKenna from Storm Lake. ![]() WCIP Pulling Rules Applied. A 1936 John Deere A driven by Steve Pickhinke of Early (sporting his Centennial beard) had a good pull. He has pulled with the same tractor since he graduated from Crestland in 1983!!
A John Deere 60 driven by Glen Wallace of Early did quite well. The 60 models were made in the mid-1950s. Young man with the cone is Tyler Pickhinke (son of Steve and Tracy Pickhinke of Early). The cones were used to mark the spot where the sled stopped. Most all drivers made it well towards the end of the track so everyone was able to see the entire pull. ![]() Classed Featured were: Farm 4700-10700 lbs. Stock 11700-19700 lbs. 3000 RPM 9700 - 12700 lbs. Super Farm 8700 - 10700 lbs. An International makes a run pulling the "Fear This" sled. ![]() Kevin Makenna from Storm Lake trying his luck with a Farmall 400. ![]() Followed by a John Deere 2510 driven by Glen Wallace. ![]() With additional weights, a Farmall driven by Jason "Spot" McKenna from Storm Lake makes a try in a higher weight class. ![]() The size of tracter is increasing as shown in this John Deere 620 driven by Greg Wallace. The sled is adjusted and more weights added for each successive class. ![]() More weights and another try for Kevin Makenna with his Farmall 400. There were a couple of pulls where the driver went over the end of the runway. The officials reset the sled for that class and had the drivers in that class pull a second time to more accurately judge the actual length to determine the winner. ![]() Another repeat performer, a John Deere 620 driven by Greg Wallace in a higher (heavier weight) class. Note the City of Early Rescue Squad vehicle furnished for the safety of the drivers and the audience. When those front wheels lift off the ground the tractors are hard to steer but the flag man kept a close watch and would have halted any that strayed too close to the rope boundary set up for the safety of the viewers. ![]() The bigger the tractor, the faster they come out past the starting line as shown by this International who is wasting no time getting started. ![]() Volunteers furnished the tractors and labor to keep the tractor pull moving. This large 8-wheeled tractor, donated by Vetter Equipment in Storm Lake and driven by Dean Drey of Early, followed the sled and returned it to the starting line after every pull. ![]() Some tractors smoked when they got under a heavier load near the end of the pull. This International by Wallace Farms kicked in full power at the beginning for a fast start. ![]() Another volunteer, Mike Brinkman, towed a scraper after every pull to smooth the ground for the next puller. This was necessary as the drivers spun their wheels into the dirt when they could no longer move. There was never a tractor without enough power to keep going - it was always the lack of traction that brought them to a halt. Peeking out from the cab were his sons Jacob (age 4) and Luke (age 1) who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their high position on the main track. ![]() Dale Feilmeier used a Sac County road packer filled with gravel to pack the dirt after the scraper had smoothed it. He, too, passed over the track after every pull. ![]() This John Deere jumped out of the starting position with front wheels and back wheels off the ground as it bounced along. It eventually got all wheels on the ground and made a good pull. ![]() An International comes roaring past the bleachers. The organizers had set up a long tent to shade the onlookers and placed bleachers beside the track. A metal building offered more shade for those who chose to sit near the end of the track. ![]() At this point the photographer had other obligations and missed the rest of the pull, just when it was getting bigger, faster, noisier and had more front-tire lifting.
