There was a day-long slow-pitch softball tournament, with an assortment of kid's games and cake walk in the afternoon. While the temperature was in the 90s, partial cloud cover in the afternoon offered some relief to the slow-pitch softball tournament players who played all day. The evening meal was served in the air-conditioned basement of the Municipal Building featuring pulled pork sandwiches, chips, beverage, watermelon, and ice cream. The band Hundred Proof played a live street dance in the evening with a beer garden hosted by the Legion. The players were made up of 6 teams from around the area including a wide variety
of ages with the majority being post-high school age through a few middle-age. Some teams came from as far away as Jefferson. Both men and women filled any position. Their professionalism was apparent as the plate and base umpires held the teams to the rules. ![]()

The field was equipped with a lighted score board. Samantha, the score keeper,
did a good job manning the scores through the long, hot day. She is shown above
right with the electronic control board resting on her lap. The snack stand was
open during the day for beverages, sandwiches, and other treats for the teams
and the onlookers. Admission was free with ample seating on the partially shaded
bench seating.![]() Dugout for "Home" team. Kid's Games and Cake Walk The Kid's Games and Cake Walk were just closing down when the photographer arrived.

The Band and Street Dance

The tables for the beer garden and street dance were set up in front of the Municipal Building. Picket fence was placed around the area with the band to set up
inside the north edge. The band, Hundred Proof, pulled their bus in long before they were to start playing
and proceeded to set up their lighting and sound equipment. The
town of Early is to be commended for having a full array of stone planters
complete with flowering plants in the main business district. There are stone
benches and a table by the Municipal Building for public use year-round.During Early's Main Street renovation, all overgrown trees had been replaced by small trees to modernize the scenery. The FOCUS committee are doing a great job in assuring the town of Early is presentable to the public even though the town suffered much damage from a tornado just the previous April 9th. | |
