Iowa Black Walnut Store BuildingOur harvesters search the woods each fall looking for the trees in their prime year of production (see the Walnut Facts page for cycles). The nuts have the hulls removed, then are washed with clean, cool water. The floating ones are discarded as they are bad -- that is, the nut meat has not filled out. Washing removes the black residue from the shell that stains hands, causes the nut meats to have a strong taste, and could cause black specks in the finished product.

Walnuts drying on screenThe nuts are dried on wire screens in a cool, dry, ventilated place for a minimum of two weeks before cracking.
Then the work begins. Black Walnuts are one of the toughest nuts to crack. They are also hard to get out of the shell if not processed and cured correctly. That is why we have become one of the largest distributors of Iowa Black Walnuts. We have dedicated people who have experimented with various nut crackers and have chosen the types they find easiest to use.

Store in Clean CansNuts can be stored after drying in clean, varmit-proof cans. Our assembly line will make short work of these nuts with most of our production crackers being able to clear out a 30 gal. can in a day.

So now your mouth is watering for a taste of these suberb Iowa-grown nuts. We offer both retail and wholesale (volume discount) prices. Packages range from 1/2 pound (8 oz.) bags up to quart (1 pound) bags -- any quantity you wish to order. They are double bagged and are shipped fresh from November through April each year.

Any nutmeats that are not immediately sold are bagged and frozen and can be ordered throughout the winter months. But don't delay as we usually run completely out of our reserve frozen supply by April, depending on how fruitful our season was. Frozen nutmeats retain their freshness for up to a year in the freezer (NON-frost-free freezers store nutmeats the best). They do not require thawing before using for snacking or grinding to put in baked products. Click Here to visit our recipes page for some delectible meals and baked products you can make at home.
